"More needs to be done locally and nationally to treat gun violence as a public health crisis and as an equity issue." Institutionalized inequities manifest in many heartbreaking ways. Gun violence continues to be one of the many social drivers of health that disproportionately affects Black and Brown communities. We need change now. We thank Compact member Dr. Kevin Churchwell for highlighting this most critical issue and advocating for structural change that will adequately meet the intersecting health needs of our communities. Community-based programming is so powerful. Low-risk, high-reward strategies need to be funded.
In 2007, Richmond had one of the highest homicide rates in California. That changed after the city implemented Advance Peace, a program that treats gun violence as a public health crisis and uses community-based violence intervention to mediate conflict. In 2023, the city reported its lowest number of homicides since they started keeping record. Learn more about how civilian-led responses are creating safer communities: https://lnkd.in/enZmW46h

Gun violence is not normal, and Americans do not need to accept it as such. We have the tools, strategies, and people to prevent daily tragedies resulting from this violence. But for too long, the federal government has dramatically underspent on proven community-based programs that address the root causes of gun violence, while spending billions in reactive interventions after harmful and fatal incidents have already occurred. It’s time for a proactive approach. Tell Congress to pass the Break the Cycle of Violence Act now to provide federal grants for community violence intervention programs.

Shootings are the number 1 cause of death for children in America. When drunk driving took too many lives our society took action. Thoughts and prayers can only do so much and are simply not working to prevent future incidents. We can be a safer country while preserving the right to bear arms. It is time we forced elected officials to take action to save lives and reduce the ripples of loss that affect so many families and communities. #EndGunViolence #ProtectOurChildren #PreventTragedy #SafeCommunities #PolicyChange #GunReformNow #DemocratisProject https://ow.ly/A6YA50TilGU

We live in two different worlds https://lnkd.in/ewZ5durJ? So much of our policy and impressions (including here gun violence, but also drug deaths, birthing problems, obesity, medical access, affordable cost of living) are tales of two different Americas. (A paean to Michael Harrington’s 1962 “The Other America,” which so influenced Bobby Kennedy. Tell me: how much has changed in the two-thirds of a century since then? I mean for the better.) From the Times: “One thing the pandemic did not change is the sharp racial disparity in the communities most exposed to fatal shootings. Black people were five times as likely to live near a gun homicide as white people, while Latinos were three times as likely, Asian Americans were twice as likely, and Native Americans were 1.4 times as likely. The violence mostly followed patterns of housing segregation, which often leaves people of color living in poorer neighborhoods where crime rates are often higher.” But — humans being humans — we react to our own neighborhoods. You know “All politics is local.” (Actually, all of life and our views of the universe are local). God bless them, but Joe Scarborough and his MSNBC crew live in a low violence, high health care, high educational opportunity, reasonable cost-of-living and affordable (for them) housing, low drug deaths America which forms the basis for their political platform. What, me worry?
