Last week at the #CMXSummit in San Francisco, I had the distinct pleasure of delving deep into the evolving world of community engagement. As an attendee, the energy was palpable—from the main stage to the buzzing networking sessions, every moment was a learning opportunity. The privilege of interacting face-to-face with pioneering thinkers and enthusiastic #communitybuilders added a rich layer to my understanding of how strategic community engagement can truly transform businesses. I am especially grateful for the thought-provoking discussions and the wealth of knowledge shared by everyone present. Walking away with a plethora of resources, including insightful community-focused books and reports, has been invaluable. A special thank you to the authors and researchers like Susie Wise, Kasley Killam, MPH, Kim Scott, Martin Carcasson, Ruth D., Molli Aronce, DeMario Bell. Your contributions are shaping our practices and perspectives. Reflecting on this year's summit, the critical role of community in business was underscored repeatedly. It's clear that community is not just about #belonging —it's about engaging actively and contributing in ways that make every member feel vital to the whole. Reflecting back on Networks Day 2023: This year's theme of #StayingStrong was more relevant than ever towards making work better for everyone in organisations. The event resonated with the key themes of wellbeing, allyship, and sustainability which played crucial roles in building resilient and effective staff networks. The webinars focused on these sub-themes were packed with inspiring discussions, effective solutions, and eye-opening insights. A heartfelt appreciation to all the network leaders, steering committee members, and network members who participated and added significant value to these conversations. Special thanks to everyone who sent in their #StayingStrong images and videos, making it a true community event. We felt your strength, commitment, and solidarity. Every co-branded imagery submitted was a testament to our collective resolve. Highlighting diversity and inclusion practitioners was an incredible initiative that recognised the often under-appreciated champions within organisations. New connections and collaboration opportunities unfolded in breakout rooms, valuable insights and experiences were shared. Our discussion was around the question “How can we build this community in the most effective way for those on a mission to engage stakeholders to drive their impact goals”? Attendees shared the challenges they are facing and the potential benefit this group may bring to them. We learned that our community needs a space for; 🔶 Sharing best practices within and across sectors, 🔶 Building partnerships locally and internationally to progress impact goals 🔶 Connecting over shared challenges and building meaningful relationships. And this is exactly why we are re-launching our community. Whether you're steering your company's sustainability strategy, managing volunteering or diversity & inclusion programs, organising community events, running a membership network, or working on supplier engagement — if you're all about moving the needle on social and environmental goals, this is the place for you. We would love to welcome everyone who is leading these types of programmes - but if you’re not leading this type of programme and if you’re someone who is interested in supporting those who lead these programmes you’re also welcome to join. The aim is to create spaces fit for purpose, where we’ll encourage learning, collaboration and progress amongst peers as well as supporters.
