As NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) celebrates its 40th anniversary, palabra. by NAHJ turns five years old this summer. NAHJ founded palabra to nurture, support, mentor, and showcase the work and vision of its independent journalists. In five years, 185 (and counting) writers, editors, photojournalists, documentarians, audio storytellers and illustrators have produced some 210 original stories. Today palabra stories reach up to 16 million potential readers through syndication via the URL Media, a coalition of ethnic and community news organizations. To celebrate palabra's 5th, and in honor of NAHJ’s 40th, we’re featuring engaging conversations and video selfies with a dozen or so NAHJ journalists. On palabra and at NAHJ.org, you will see and hear from folks who were on hand when NAHJ started. I had an interesting conversation yesterday with a longtime colleague in the journalism world that reminded me of the value of having all ages present at the table. We talk a lot and do a lot about diversity equity and inclusion (DEI for those who are familiar) in today's journalism industry, but it is rare to have a conversation about the value of the journalists in our midst who are 60+ and have been at it for decades. They are walking encyclopedias of knowledge of the history of the industry -- and the history of events that they have covered as reporters. How we can place more emphasis on listening to, including and welcoming journalists of all ages to the table? How can we best celebrate more senior journos and their longtime contributions?

Last week I attended the NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists) conference in Hollywood. One of the highlights was a session on covering Hollywood with some successful Latino journalists, including Clayton Davis, Rosy Cordero (Associate Editor at Deadline), Mandalit del Barco, and Kristen Lopez (entertainment writer, film critic, and pop culture essayist). The conversation was so relevant, especially with all the changes and challenges in the film, TV and streaming industry. Like, did you know that despite the significant contributions of Latino audiences, Latinos hold less than 5% of leading on-screen, off-screen, and executive leadership roles in U.S. media? These key takeaways hit home for me... - Latino audiences have the highest per capita annual film attendance, at 3.3 times a year (according to research by McKinsey & Company). During the summer when Hollywood produces blockbusters, Latinos are consistently the group that boosts box office success. For instance, “Inside Out 2” made $115 million on opening weekend — and had a 38% Latino audience! -The film and TV industry is in a transition, so adapting our storytelling is more important than ever. -Highlighting diverse Latino voices and experts in media coverage is super important because it helps tell stories that really reflect our community. This helps everyone understand each other better and fights stereotypes. -It's important to represent the Latino community authentically, without focusing solely on industry issues. -Latino storytellers speak up!! We need to have a voice in the room and uplift other Latino storytellers. When we amplify the impact of diverse voices, we can lead to more inclusive and accurate storytelling. #NAHJ #LatinoJournalists #LatinoStorytellers

It is rather sad that in 2024 we are still dealing with this. Representation does matter. Sometimes, you get tired of applying/fighting to get in these places. And when you try to build a media startup, it is financially an uphill task. Your worth and value are questioned in the media food chain. If you are an African or Black journo in the global west, you know how challenging it is to a get a job. And when you do, you have to do twice as much the work, if not more to be good enough. Even then, it might still not be enough. And when you make a mistake, it is amplified 100 times more on the office floor. Even the rats and ants will know you made a mistake. "In every single country covered, the percentage of top editors of colour remains below the percentage of people of colour in the general population." In the UK, only 7% of top editors are Black/people of colour. In the US, it is 29%, and in South Africa, it is 71%. In Germany and Brazil, there are no Black editors in visible position of power. Having scientists willing and able to share, represent and sometimes defend their science in the media is important. Scientists sharing their work with lay audiences helps create an informed society that can make informed choices - from governments, policy makers and business leaders big decisions to individuals in their daily lives. This is especially important for climate change, health, vaccination, energy and other areas of research and innovation that are contested in the media. And sometimes talking science in the media is just plain fun! I really encourage scientists to do media training - not just because I'm one of the trainers and I love doing it, but because expert comment has never been more important. #MediaTraining #ScienceCommunication
