Senior Director, Environment Program, Wallace Global Fund

After an incredible six year run leading the climate and environment grantmaking at Wallace Global Fund, I will soon be leaving the foundation to take on my next challenge in the sector. My last day at the foundation is August 31.    Working in philanthropy is a true privilege, especially when your principals are willing to be bold, take risks, and work intersectionality across issues and geographies. I am deeply grateful to the Fund's board and leadership for putting their trust in me to drive innovation and catalyze initiatives across climate and environmental justice, democracy, economic transformation, and community revitalization. I am especially grateful to all of the steadfast partners and organizations that I have had the joy and privilege to work alongside for so many years. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with so many of you as we tackle the most pressing crisis of our time, while building a more just and inclusive society.   As of September 1, I'm going to volunteer to help get climate champions elected at every level of government, especially down ballot in state and local races that are vitally important to protecting our democracy and sit at the front lines of ambitious climate action. Keep an eye out for volunteering opportunities this fall with candidates supported by Climate Cabinet: www.climatecabinet.org.

As a follow-up to my post, here is the official statement from Wallace Global Fund regarding the phase out of its programs due to the final years of spend down: "As we approach the end of our strategic plan and come closer to the final years of our spend down, we have decided to phase out individual program areas in favor of a more integrated and intersectional approach to grantmaking... As a result of these programmatic changes, we are sharing news of some forthcoming staff transitions. Allison Barlow and Heather Coleman will be departing the foundation at the end of August. We thank Allison and Heather for their many valued contributions to WGF and the movements they have helped to support during their time at the foundation."    Scott Fitzmorris, Co-Chair of the Wallace Global Fund board, reflected: “Heather brought a level of professionalism and savvy to her role at Wallace Global Fund. As a grantmaker and strategist, she helped elevate the impact of our grantees holding the fossil fuel industry accountable while launching innovative ventures such as Working Power. We wish her much success in her future endeavors.”

Heather Coleman, you have been a true leader and it's been a great joy and privilege to get to work closely with you. I deeply admire and appreciate the integrity, strategic skill, and ambition you have brought to climate philanthropy. It's safe to say that if your voice is in the meeting, we're going to leave it more ambitious and hard-charging, better organized, more honest about the challenges, and more inventive in how to overcome them. And we're going to laugh together in the process. All of this is why you are one of my favorite collaborators, and I count myself lucky to have gotten to work closely with you. I can't wait to see where you direct your tremendous talents next, and I hope to get to keep collaborating! Congrats on an incredible run.

So many important moments you have contributed to in the last 6 years. Some of the climate movements biggest victories ever were due to you holding so many of us through navigating tensions and helping us seize opportunities while keeping our eyes on the prize. I'll always be grateful to the critical catalytic support you helped marshal for Sunrise Movement and the Green New Deal Network in particular, and then continuing to see the visions through and never giving up. Can't wait to support you and continue to see you thrive on your next chapter. <3

Heather! How many times have we gotten to plot in conference rooms, COPs, bars, restaurants, and *all* the zooms over the years? THANK YOU for helping make so many of those schemes real. From the divestment movement and Stop the Money Pipeline to Fossil Free Media and Make Polluters Pay, you've provided such critical feedback, insights, and support. Can't wait to hear what comes next and keep plotting more good trouble! Much love, friend!

I’ve been lucky to see your leadership up close, helping to launch a whole new field of climate philanthropy (rural solutions). It’s fair to say @ruralclimate would not be where we are today without your coaching, ideas, and energy. Like many others in this thread, I’m excited to see what comes next. Our entire climate movement is better, stronger, more responsive and smarter because of you! 🙏

Heather, as a distant cousin and a close conspirator, from Oxfam to Wallace, I’ve long marveled at your outsize impact on and within the climate movement. Such smarts, such verve - here’s to you!
