Today, we celebrate the rich tapestry of global cultures and the crucial role intercultural dialogue plays in achieving peace and prosperity. 📈 Did You Know? - Cultural and creative sectors employ over 48 million people globally, contributing significantly to the global GDP. - Strengthening intercultural dialogue is key to resolving conflicts, with 89% of conflicts occurring in regions with low levels of such dialogue. Have worked in the cultural sector for more than three decades, here are a few more suggestions for the new government and in no particular order ·      Governance- Boards need a shakeup. Stop appointing the same old trustees and ‘expert advisers’ to culture boards or those who will support the status quo. Some sit on several boards at any one-time preventing new blood, new ideas and change. Most boards do not reflect the communities they serve. Stop cancelling people who advocate change for the better. ·       Communities/civil society need to be equal partners with the cultural sector. Stop consulting to tick boxes: need to adopt meaningful collaboration. UNESCO’s 2003 Convention which gives communities power in safeguarding intangible culture which is imbued in the tangible is a great tool to achieve this. The UK ratified it in June 2024. Do not rely on “experts” and displace communities. ·        Address the serious conservation skills shortage. ·       Change of mindset among key policy makers & cultural advisers responsible for creating culture war policies and practices for more than a decade is  key to stopping culture wars. Need new thinking to reverse it. ·       Change institutional/structural racism and inequalities and toxic culture to prevent the cultural sector haemorrhaging staff, especially those from some protected groups. * Climate Justice must be a cross cutting issue in planning and delivery of cultural heritage. * More equitable distribution and diversification of AHRC funding ·       Work more closely with international organisations such as ICOMOS etc. in caring for world heritage sites and promote good practice in implementing UNESCO Conventions ·       Global South (GS) wants self-determination and sustainability. Also remember that there is a GS in the Global North! A new approach needed to the way cultural aid is framed and delivered in the GS. ✨🌍 KEA has been commissioned by UNESCO to conduct the third evaluation of the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) This project aims to evaluate the relevance and impact of the IFCD’s initiatives across funding cycles 7 to 13, providing essential insights to enhance its governance and implementation. The evaluation will: 🔍Assess progress on the implementation of recommendations from previous evaluations to identify lessons learned and guide future initiatives. 📊Evaluate the sustainability of the IFCD’s impact on long-term cultural development and its contribution to the UN #SDGs. 🤝 Highlight the role of the IFCD in fostering South-South and North-South cooperation and its broader implications for cultural diversity and development. KEA will use a detailed methodological framework, combining systematic data collection and analysis with qualitative and quantitative methods. The process includes conducting workshops and in-depth interviews with IFCD management, decision-makers, and project beneficiaries, along with field visits to selected project countries. On World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, I was pleased that during the recent Milken Institute Global Conference 2024 in Beverly Hills, there were discussions and programming centred on protecting the diversity of cultural expressions, while respecting the richness of the world’s cultures, and highlighting the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. Our diversity gives us the unique ability to appreciate and understand each other, and this was evident throughout the conference, as I engaged with attendees from various nations and a multitude of professional and social backgrounds, and reflected on the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, which is a cultural institution acting as an agent of change, reimagining spaces, building community, sparking prosperity, and helping to solve some of the most pressing issues, from tackling the health and climate crisis to raising visibility for underrepresented communities to forging the type of research which drives social change. According to UNESCO data, the cultural and creative sector is one of the most powerful engines of development worldwide, and with 89% of all current conflicts in the world occurring in countries with low intercultural dialogue, to foster effective cooperation and sustain peace, the strengthening of communication to move the needle and storytelling for change - to create hope out of crisis, must be a priority in our global interconnected community. #CulturalDiversity #MIGlobal #MilkenInstitute #ShapingaSharedFuture #WellbeingForAll #WellbeingEconomy The Wellbeing Foundation Africa

Held every year on 21 May, UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development highlighting not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development. With 89% of all current conflicts in the world occurring in countries with low intercultural dialogue, to forge effective cooperation and sustain peace, strengthening intercultural dialogue must be a priority. Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development. Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. This is captured in the culture conventions, which provide a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development. At the same time, acceptance and recognition of cultural diversity – in particular through innovative use of media and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) – are conducive to dialogue among civilizations and cultures, respect and mutual understanding. It was such an honor to take part in a panel discussion today that the British Council in partnership with the Uganda Parliamentary Forum for Creatives during the UGAPAFOCI SYMPOSIUM. I shared the panel with CK Japheth, Nelson Kasadha, Barbra Babweteera Mutambi and moderated by Wabwire Joseph Ian. Our discussions where around; 1. Effectively communicating research outcomes to policymakers for influencing cultural policies in Uganda. 2. Advocacy and support mechanisms needed in Uganda's Cultural Policy to foster collaboration between creative industries and other sectors. 3. Strategies within Uganda's Cultural Policy to enhance funding accessibility for artists and ensure equitable distribution across diverse cultural practices. 4. Policy measures to support, recognize, and provide resources for informal cultural organizations, encouraging formalization and sustainable growth. 5. The role of creative spaces like hubs, maker spaces, and museums as catalysts for innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth in the creative economy. 6. Community engagement in preserving and promoting cultural heritage in Uganda and how policy can encourage and support such initiatives. 7. The Stanbic Bank Incubation Centre's contribution to Uganda's Cultural Policy, focusing on fostering economic growth and social impact within the creative economy. Celebrating World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development! 🎉 Today, we honour the richness of the world's cultures and the pivotal role of intercultural dialogue in fostering peace and sustainable development. UNESCO’s data reveals that the cultural and creative sector is a powerful engine of global development, employing over 48 million people, nearly half of whom are women. Yet, this sector still needs greater recognition in public policies and international cooperation. At JCTR, we echo the call for cultural diversity as a cornerstone for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs). Cultural diversity not only drives economic growth but also enriches our lives. As we celebrate this day, let’s remember that 89% of conflicts occur in areas with low intercultural dialogue. Strengthening this dialogue is essential for peace and stability. The historic Declaration for Culture adopted at MONDIACULT 2022 marks a significant step forward, affirming culture as a global public good and integrating it into the development agenda beyond 2030. This declaration supports artists' rights, indigenous communities, and the protection of cultural heritage. Join us in advocating for a world where cultural diversity is celebrated and protected.
