The Lemelson Foundation's Senior Program Officer David Coronado recently chatted with The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) Director, Michael W. Nestor, PhD, to expand on the Foundation's Invention Education strategy and to offer his perspectives on the value of invention education. When asked what message he would share with students and life-long learners who are curious about pursuing invention and problem-solving careers, David shared: "Surround yourself with other problem-solvers, tinkerers, and innovators. Collaboration is key, and the support and inspiration of a like-minded community can be invaluable. The smartest person in the room is not the one with all the degrees but who recognizes their strengths and surrounds themselves with those who complement what is needed to solve the problem. Most importantly, never stop learning, never stop questioning, and never stop dreaming. Even when others do not believe in you, know the world needs your unique perspective, boundless enthusiasm, and unwavering belief in the power of invention to change it." 🔍🧠🌐🤝📚💡 Embarking on a new research journey from scratch has its challenges, and one crucial step is building a solid research question. It's the bedrock of your work, much like a building's foundation. Remarkable scientific achievements often sprout from thought-provoking questions. Personally, I kickstart my research by the simple question: "Has this been done before?". I also find exploring publicly available omics data very useful to test some hypotheses. Analyses in silico generate a cascade of questions, setting the stage for deeper exploration. Another very enriching opportunity is to enjoy Meetings. Attending the Broad Institute Nineteenth Annual Retreat in December was an energizing experience. Engaging with postdocs and graduate students sparked new ideas, questions, and methodologies. Symposiums like these are invaluable for fostering connections and sharing insights. Grateful to be part of the Schmidt Science Fellows, providing crucial support, mentoring and a strong network. A thoughtful piece in The Economist on new ways of funding scientific research. In the world of limited resources, funding organizations should treat the question of best ways of funding science as a research question itself. Actionable insights from the experience of innovative funders, like Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)), Schmidt Futures Moonshot Project and individual philanthropists need to be shared often and broadly. Funding promising people rather than specific projects has always been my preferred approach. One of my favourite organisations in mental health space, One Mind does it really well. Their Rising Star Award program supports promising scientists at $100K/year for 3 years, in addition to networking opportunities, communication training and leadership development. The 2010 Rising Star Award recipient, Dr Joshua Gordon, now serves as the Director of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) We need to appreciate the “risk of not taking the risk”, and normalise “failure” as part of the learning and as one of the ways to supercharge scientific progress. Public-private-academic partnerships are probably the most efficient and effective ways to address complex problems, like mental health. #philanthropy #researchfunding #mentalhealth
