FUNDING: It only counts if it happens. We need more projects becoming VIABLE and moving to IMPLEMENTATION. If we are to move into Delivery at Scale, we need to: 1. Quantify all the direct benefits 2. Piggyback Decarbonisation onto other projects to minimize the marginal costs 3. Think beyond just full grant funding => https://lnkd.in/essMxMF5 #Viability #Retrofit #Decarbonise Annabel Thorne Peter Dunn (MRICS, MCIOB) Jack Saunders Tom Aram David Gilbey Daniel Lockwood MRICS Shiro Pillay Nichola Fawcett Rebecca Magee Manuel Caucci Sara Dawson Rosie Andrews Kingsley Thomas AtkinsRéalis UK Green Building Council (UKGBC)

With the increasing importance of building sustainable communities, there is a growing interest from landowners and housebuilders to create "legacy developments" that prioritize excellent design and construction, ensuring long-term benefits for future generations. The notion of leaving a legacy is not a novel idea. However, in recent years, this concept has evolved, allowing landowners to have more control over the design, construction, and management of projects. This approach enables them to make a positive and lasting impact on their communities while also achieving the necessary financial, social, and environmental objectives.

A very interesting discussion on UK's timber supply and how 81% of our timber products are imported. The reduction in demand for using locally grown timber can be prevented and become a topic of discussion in practice between architects and structural engineers to implement C16 graded timber into our projects. Using local materials will have a positive impact on our carbon footprint, but how do we reduce the possible negative effects on our biodiversity if our demand for UK grown timber increases steeply in the next 30 years?
RIAS CPD | Future wood supplies for construction, a focus on the UK Timber resource Thurs 27 June 2024 12:30 - 13:30 | Online https://ow.ly/hmzq50SgYBT Join us for our CPD next Thursday discussing the current and future wood supplies for construction in the UK, the wood resource from UK forests and current and future opportunities for its use in construction. Building sustainable communities is at the heart of our mission. We recently secured planning for our first community in Cambourne, which encompasses these sustainable principles. The 256-home scheme includes community facilities designed around both private and affordable sustainable homes – 72 of the affordable-rent homes will be designed using Passivhaus principles. Insulation, air-source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, and sustainable building services and controls will mean the development is both gas-free and energy-efficient. We also set a target to increase biodiversity net gain (BNG) from the development by 20%. The percentage of BNG mandated by the government is 10%. Some of the BNG will be achieved at the development, while the remaining percentage will be delivered nearby.
