Ever wondered what life would be like if no one collected your garbage? Ever thought about where you’d get clean water if it wasn’t available in stores or from your faucets? What about if toilets didn’t exist? 🫣 Clean water, clean streets, waste disposal, and so much more are just a given for most in the US today thanks to public health efforts. Public health works from the understanding that the health of one affects the health of all and is dedicated to increasing health on a community-wide basis. By finding ways to increase health on a large scale, it’s effectively like a shield, protecting the entire community together. Yet it was only 158 years ago that the nation’s first health department was established (New York, 1866) amidst declining sanitary and health conditions. Without it, we would likely still be battling illnesses that were common then, like cholera, tuberculosis, smallpox, and typhoid, with life expectancy being much lower. We’ve come a long way in these 150 years, yet we still have a long way to go to ensure that levels of health are raised for everyone. This National Public Health Week, please learn how you can support your local public health movements, policies, and agencies. #PublicHealth #NationalPublicHealthWeek #AllForOne #PublicHealthMatters #PublicHealthAwareness

Public health infrastructure, which includes the workforce, provides the foundation for all public health services - including developing vaccines, treating chronic illnesses, responding to public health emergencies, and even ensuring you don't get sick after brushing your teeth 😅. Post-Covid, the importance of a strong, competent public health workforce is ever more apparent. Through literature review, surveys, and interviews, I will examine the impact of global outbreaks on the public health workforce and identify lessons for future preparedness. I will present a portion of my findings at the APHL Annual Conference in Milwaukee this May!
If you brushed your teeth this morning and didn’t get sick, you’re benefiting from public health infrastructure. Keep this in mind as you move through your day - driving around on paved roads in a car that has been crash tested, eating food that isn’t expired or contaminated with pathogens, meeting your friend at a coffee shop that isn’t a cloud of cancer-causing, asthma irritating tobacco smoke. That is public health. It’s not flashy, fancy, or super high-tech. In fact, if it’s working well, it’s barely noticeable. But it keeps you and your loved ones alive and thriving without so much as a thought. Happy National Public Health Week! Be sure to shoutout all of the heroes of public health in your life this week!

Making the world a better place, one "Did you know?" at a time. Passionate about science communication, ecology, food systems, & livable communities. (B.Sc. Environmental Science)
Public health, public safety & infrastructure is a backbone of society. Listen to scientists. Trust scientists. Learn more about how science interacts with uncertainty in very structured ways to inform decisions that keep us safe. Currently reading The Poison Squad, about the history of US Food Safety research & the struggles passing legislation It's interesting to see how the conversations around "pure food" were going on over 125yrs ago, and how difficult it was to get tiny wins (e.g. no formaldehyde in milk!)
