The latest statistics show that U.S. fire departments respond to thousands of fires each year in dormitories, fraternity houses, and sorority houses. Cooking and lithium-ion battery safety are among the top fire concerns for on and off-campus student housing. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and CCFS C. (The Center for Campus Fire Safety) collaborate on the resources needed to ensure students, parents, and campus housing staff and administrators have the relevant information and resources they need to make living spaces as safe as possible from fires and associated hazards. Huge fire at a school ─ thankfully, no reported casualties (other than the fabric!) ... 👉 Mossbourne Community Academy is one of the largest timber frame buildings in the UK. The primary structure is a Glulam (Glued Laminated Timber) frame consisting of over 1,000 cubic metres (35,000 cubic feet) of renewable European whitewood formed into paired columns and beams 👉 The timber was sourced, laminated and machined in Holland, arriving on site ready to be bolted together and erected. All the connections are made using steel plates and bolts. Internally, the bolts are deeply recessed into the timber to avoid children snagging themselves, while externally the bolts are exposed, avoiding potential weak spots where water may penetrate the timber 👉 The primary structure is comprised of two rows of parallel ‘H’ frames that are spanned by secondary beams. This structure frames a series of classrooms, with the secondary beams projecting past the frame to carry a series of external walkways. The use of timber has enabled continuous structural members to extend from interior to exterior, without the need for a thermal break 👉 The timber is untreated internally and has only minimal applied protection externally. In order to avoid a costly maintenance regime the frame has been detailed in such a way that it will protect itself from of the damaging effects of water. Each beam and column, where external, is covered with a capping of Iroko hardwood. This not only protects the beams from the damaging effects of standing water but also includes a drip detail to reduce the amount of water running down the face of the structure https://lnkd.in/eJ5x4Rpt https://lnkd.in/ew65N7mK

Tragedies like the recent fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy, which claimed the lives of 17 students, highlight a critical issue: the need for schools to prioritize student safety. Schools should be sanctuaries of learning and growth, not places where students feel trapped or unsafe. The practice of locking dormitory doors at night, without considering emergency scenarios, is extremely concerning. It’s crucial for school administrations to balance security with safety. In the event of a fire or other emergencies, students must have clear and accessible escape routes. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for structural reforms. Dormitories should be equipped with multiple emergency exits, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers. Regular safety drills and emergency preparedness plans must be mandatory. The government also has a role to play. Implementing strict regulations and conducting regular inspections of school facilities can help prevent such incidents. It’s time for policymakers to enforce standards that ensure the safety and security of every student. Parents entrust schools with their children's lives. We owe it to them to create environments where students are protected and nurtured. Let’s demand accountability and push for changes that safeguard our future generations. May their soul rest in peace❤️🕊️.

Three school fires this week—at primary schools in Bristol and Ipswich and a secondary school in East London—have reignited calls for automatic fire sprinklers in schools. Public data suggests less than 8.5% of new schools constructed since 2015 have automatic fire sprinklers fitted within them. Sprinklers can save lives and protect schools. Learn more about these incidents and the role of sprinklers in fire safety: https://lnkd.in/eyzbv5UU #FireSafety #SchoolSprinklers #Education
