Digital Design for Recycling - Project Update! We are pleased to report considerable progress in our DiDe4Rec project (Digital Design for Recycling), which is steadily moving towards sustainable product development. In today's environmentally conscious economy, early consideration of end-of-life possibilities is imperative in product development. That's why we launched the DiDe4Rec project, aiming to develop and validate a holistic approach for recyclable lightweight products based on fiber-reinforced polymers. With a focus on incorporating technical specifications, economic factors, and ecological considerations into the design process, we're empowering product developers to prioritize recyclability from day one. This requires a deep understanding of cross-life cycle relationships between processing, use, reprocessing, and reuse of materials. The project has achieved the latest milestones and is well on track as the two process chains - thermoforming and injection molding - are about to enter the phase of physical trials. As we move forward, we're excited to announce the launch of a new work package focusing on Design Methodology, including Artificial Intelligence and sustainability. During our recent project meeting at Forward Engineering's Munich facilities, the DiDe4Rec team convened to align on future tasks and desired outcomes. Two days of constructive discussions culminated in a tour of the Recycling and Disassembly Center of the BMW Group, grounding our theoretical endeavors in practical application. The European project BlackCycle led by Michelin has won the Environmental Achievement award of the year at Tire Technology Expo! This project, started in 2020, is coordinated by Michelin and involves 12 European partners from different origins and sizes. It aims to create, develop and optimize a full Value Chain for a tire circular economy. After 4 years of existence, this award is especially important for us because it rewards outstanding results showing that its objective can be met. Indeed, thanks to the cooperative work between the academic and industrial partners, the BlackCycle project has demonstrated the possibility of creating a tire circular economy by developing the technologies needed to obtain very high-quality raw materials from the recycling of end-of-life tires. In particular, it was shown that it is possible to produce carbon blacks from refined tire pyrolysis oil on a scale of several tons and of the same quality as their counterparts from fossil feedstock. This European-supported project has set the whole ecosystem in motion and is leading the way towards a powerful circular tire economy with a positive impact on the environment! A new step towards a greener future 🌱 FTMC contributes to an innovative project that will be useful in the construction and finishing industry. It will use waste tires as eco-friendly soundproofing panels! "A few years ago, our colleague from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Dr. Svajus Asadauskas, led the research - together with business partners from the construction sector and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH), he was developing a new tire recycling technology that can be used for the production of sound absorbing plates," says Karolis Stašys, Innovation Manager at FTMC. S. Asadauskas's work is continued today by chemist Dr. Tadas Matijošius, and the idea has gained momentum. A new generation of plates has already been developed through a joint effort between science and business - they are environmentally friendly, have excellent sound absorbtion properties and can be used to replace the current expensive and unsustainable solutions in the construction and finishing industry 🏙️ "We, FTMC, have developed a technology to better recycle tires, VILNIUS TECH has studied the physical properties of the plates, and now our business partners are preparing for the mass production of a new product," says K. Introducing YouRban project, funded by the prestigious funding programme Horizon Europe by the European Commission and coordinated by the Politecnico di Milano. ⚙️💡 ‣ The main goal? We work to tackle the challenge of reinforced polymer waste, involving citizens, artists and designers for innovative recycling and upcycling solutions. ‣ But what is the beating heart of YouRban? Our truck, a mobile workshop that acts as a traveling workshop, hosting end-of-life composite material recycling and reprocessing technologies. This is not only a productive tool, but a powerful means of dissemination to promote the new values of the circular economy through exhibitions, artistic events and participatory activities. Syxis will deploy a CoCreation tool improved and customized for the urban dimension and for the circular economy needs. It will be released on cloud, easy to access and use through a social media approach. It will be developed by Syxis and adopted in Pilots. With YouRban’s traveling truck-laboratory, we promote the circular economy through exhibitions and events.
