We want to thank TD for their extraordinary support of HIAS Pennsylvania, which will help our Refugee Resettlement Program provide housing to newly-arrived refugees. The #affordablehousing crisis has made it increasingly difficult for refugees arriving in Philadelphia to access and sustain safe, affordable housing. With TD Bank’s commitment, HIAS Pennsylvania can now provide temporary housing for some of our refugee clients while we help them find permanent housing. We are proud to be one of only three Pennsylvania organizations to receive support through TD Bank’s #HousingforEveryone initiative. What if the most effective solutions to refugee crises came from the refugees themselves? #Refugee-led organizations have the unique advantage of being part of the communities they serve, and we've learned their expertise runs even deeper. ➡ Refugee responses, including policies and programs, are more effective when informed by refugees' real needs and lived experiences. ➡ Refugee leaders are doing some of the most effective work on the front lines of crises. ➡ Refugee voices are crucial for sustainable solutions and integration into host communities. Without them, we risk continuing short-sighted responses that only address immediate needs. The recent report from The Woolf Institute, "From Arrival to Integration: Building Communities for Refugees and for Britain," offers a compelling roadmap for reforming the UK's asylum and refugee system. Highlighting the system's inefficiencies, it underscores the importance of integration from day one and localised delivery for better economic and social outcomes. Key recommendations include a new, holistic approach to refugee integration, devolving control to local entities, improving housing solutions, and empowering refugees with immediate work and education access. Implementing these changes could transform the UK's approach, benefiting both refugees and the wider society with a projected net economic gain of #£1.2 #billion within five years. A move towards a more humane and productive system underscores the need for community solidarity and international responsibility. #My_Thoughts Adopting these reforms could mark a transformative step towards valuing refugees not just as individuals in need, but as key contributors to our society and economy. It's a powerful reminder that effective integration can unlock immense potential, enriching our communities and strengthening the fabric of our nation. #InclusiveSociety #EconomicGrowth #RefugeeIntegration #AsylumReform #CommunitySolidarity

An important read!
In this The Conversation Canada piece, co-authored with Allan Reesor-McDowell (Matthew House Ottawa), we share preliminary findings from our joint research project on the right to housing for refugee claimants with Delphine Nakache (uOttawa COMMON LAW) & Azar Masoumi (Carleton University). Ahead of Refugee Rights Day, which celebrates the 1985 Singh decision affirming that refugee claimants are protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we propose three key recommendations. https://lnkd.in/gzhMsRgt

I'm thrilled to celebrate five years at HIAS! It's been an incredible journey working alongside dedicated colleagues and making a tangible impact on the lives of people worldwide. Here are some highlights from the past half-decade: - Crisis Response: Mobilized effective responses to the fall of Kabul, the war in Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas conflict. We raised upwards of $1 million for humanitarian aid and facilitated the formation of 34 local private sponsorship groups to welcome over 100 individual refugees in California. - Policy Wins: Successfully advocated for policy and funding wins for HIAS' four California resettlement affiliates through strategic partnerships with organizations like Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California (JPAC) and the CHIRLA-led CA Welcomes Coalition. This resulted in securing $8 million over three years for asylee case management, putting up strong fronts to secure state support for asylum shelter programs at the border. - Partnership Expansion: Grew HIAS' reach by recruiting JFCS of Long Beach/West Orange County to become our newest California resettlement partner to earn U.S. Department of State approval to welcome newcomers. - Advocacy and Education: Designed and implemented numerous advocacy and educational programs to empower individuals to take action on behalf of refugees. These initiatives have had a profound impact on raising awareness and fostering support for our cause. While reflecting on our achievements, it's clear that the refugees, asylum seekers, and other forcibly displaced people are increasingly politicized worldwide, making our work more crucial than ever. I invite you support HIAS in these challenging times. Looking forward to continuing the work with so many of you across my network! #refugeeswelcome #refugeesupport #asylumseekers #asylum #humanitarian #humanitarianwork #humanitarianism #emergencyresponse #crisisresponse
