Foresight is 20/20: Predicting Failure in Complex Systems Complex engineered systems, from airplanes to spacecraft, are marvels of human ingenuity. Fear, others' as as well as your own, will put blockers in your path to fulfilling your mission. Very early in my tenure as NASA administrator, I faced a myriad of challenges, including severe budget constraints, technical hurdles and schedule performance issues. There was a massive dip in confidence among our team and our supporters in Congress. This period was challenging, especially when Congress questioned NASA’s capability to fulfill its commitments to human exploration and scientific research. Most days I was overworked, tired and pissed off. During this time, I was inspired by a drawing and note from an 11-year-old student named Amanda. She had a simple yet profound message, “You will never know unless you go” above a drawing of a rocket ship heading toward a planetary body. It made me remember who I was doing it all for. Young people like Amanda, my children, my grandchildren, my friends kids and grandkids, my country that has given my family freedom. Multi disciplinary teams : As a boy I was obsessed with the Apollo missions, Saturn 5 rockets, astronauts and moon dust. My Uncle Bob worked at JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab)in Pasadena. What I hadn’t appreciated then was the way NASA (and Bob) changed the game when it came to innovation. Their secret? Bringing together people from all sorts of different fields to work on the toughest challenges of the space race. At its peak, the Apollo program employed 400,000 people and required the support of over 20,000. The teams they brought together were called "Multidisciplinary Teams", or MDTs for short. The magic of MDTs is that they mix up skills, viewpoints, and know-how to crack complex problems in fresh ways. NASA's 1960s dream teams weren't just made up of rocket scientists and engineers. They also had experts in everything from materials to medicine, nutrition to psychology. By mashing up insights from wildly different areas, NASA was able to innovate at warp speed. Many of the wild new ideas that NASA's MDTs came up with back then, like satellite tech and space food, ended up transforming whole industries and becoming part of our everyday lives. As a business leader today, you might not be aiming for the actual moon, but in our crazy fast-moving world, you're still facing challenges that need the same kind of bold, boundary-busting approach to innovation. By stealing a page from NASA's playbook and setting up your own MDTs, you can prep your company for the future and get ready to unleash the next generation of game-changing ideas. As the sci-fi genius Arthur C. Clarke said, "The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible." That's exactly the kind of push-the-limits, make-the-impossible-possible spirit that MDTs are all about. NASA opened up a whole new universe of possibilities in the 1960s by busting out of silos and harnessing the power of diverse thinking. And my with my Uncle Bob , NASA helped me to shoot for the stars and think big and diverse.
