Time as a spiral? In the new episode of the Vox podcast In a Nutshell, I'm going to have a look at the topic of time – but not quite how you know it. Radboud University assistant professor Laura M. De Vos joins me to talk about Indigenous understandings of time, why we should listen more closely to nature ourselves – and what looking seven generations into the future has to do with all of this. If you would like to know how time can be understood as a spiral, do have a listen, either down below on Spotify or, as always, on the Vox website. #SciencePodcast #AmericanStudies #ScienceJournalism https://lnkd.in/eqkVRS99

Strategic Marketing Director | Elevating Brands & Igniting Growth | Passionate Leader at the Intersection of Creativity and Analytics
Reflecting on one of the most inspiring moments of my career journey — interviewing Miss Opal Lee, affectionately known as the grandmother of Juneteenth. Back in 2016, Miss Opal walked 1,400 miles from Fort Worth, TX to Washington D.C. to plead the case to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Shortly after the recording of this podcast in 2021, the bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. To say that Miss Opal is a force to be reckoned with is an understatement. Here are 5 things that I learned from her. 1️⃣ Embrace a perpetual state of growth: Living always in “beta mode” keeps us agile and hungry for new challenges. Don’t forget that growth happens outside your comfort zone. 2️⃣ Surround yourself with believers: The power of a supportive community propels us toward our highest potential. 3️⃣ Change is gradual: Progress is made through consistent, incremental actions rather than one grand gesture. 4️⃣ Own your brilliance: Never allow anyone to dim your light or undermine your confidence. 5️⃣ Kindness triumphs over hate: Nurturing compassion, especially towards oneself, fosters deeper connections and lasting impact. 👀 Fun fact about this podcast: This project holds extra significance for me, particularly amidst the challenges posed by the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when traditional public transportation use was discouraged. Tasked with maintaining rider engagement in a digital landscape, I proposed the idea of a branded podcast to my VP of Marketing, and with some hesitation, she said “Go for it.” Rather than inundating me with questions about technicalities, she showed unwavering trust in my abilities, empowering me to take the reins. And so I proceeded to write, edit, record, produce, distribute, and build a successful integrated marketing strategy around this limited series that facilitated the outreach of a significant system redesign and fostered a stronger sense of community among transit supporters. ✨ I’ve learned a thing or two about podcasting since and, while there are moments of this episode that make me cringe, I’m incredibly proud of myself for taking the risk. Lately, I’ve been getting the itch to launch another podcast. This time one of my own and re-listening to Miss Opal’s interview might have just given me the courage to “Go for it.” #BelieveInYourself #Inspiration #OpalLee #ProfessionalGrowth

Is this the antidote to cynicism? Sam Daley-Harris is the author of the widely-acclaimed book "Reclaiming Our Democracy", and is just out with an updated fourth edition. He is also the founder of the anti-poverty lobby RESULTS in 1980 and Civic Courage in 2012. He says we need more civic courage, and more organizations training people to do effective, bold things. Whether it's writing a letter to the editor on a cause you care about, or meeting with a member of Congress, it's actions like these that leave volunteers and advocates feeling empowered and even transformed.
