Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil ’s Post

This week, Jens K. visited Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) on behalf of Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil . CNPEM is one of only three of the most recent 4th generation synchrotron’s in the world. This electron accelerator emits a light of a broad part of the spectrum, which can filtered and used to analyze the atomic structure of all kinds of substances, like a gigantic microscope. It is a unique installation that demonstrates Brazil’s ambition to innovate. Synchrotron light can also be used in research topics relevant for the Netherlands. The synchrotron can, for example, visualize active sites of enzymes in great detail. This technique is applied to enzymes isolated from capivaras and manatees (sea cows), animals native from Brazil, that can break down plant material very well. When we understand those enzymes well, we can use them to produce more efficient biofuels.   Another example is research on energy materials. Electrodes from electrolyzers are studied on nanoscale, so the efficiency to produce green hydrogen can be improved.   Get in contact with the ia network if you are interested in those technologies. We can help you set up research collaborations with Brazil.  Robert Thijssen Daniël Burgers Tijmen Steensma Ernst-Jan Bakker Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IA (Netherlands Innovation Network) Kingdom of the Netherlands in Brazil NWO (Dutch Research Council)
