Last week, ANPEI, the Brazilian association of innovative industry, held its yearly conference and we were there! All the big players from Brazil’s innovation ecosystem were present, including Finep and EMBRAPII - Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa e Inovação Industrial, two important funding bodies the Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil collaborates with. We talked with Marcelo Prim from Embrapii about possible R&D collaboration between Brazil and the Netherlands. Embrapii co-funds and manages research in more than 90 Embrapii-units: research groups capable of providing R&D on demand and has an MOU with TNO that they want to renew. Hot topics on the conference were: 👉 Artificial Intelligence, with experts given their vision on Brazil’s ambitious AI plan that was launched one month ago by president Lula and for which we wrote an appreciation for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken . 👉 Eco-innovation. We met with Marina Belintani from startup Mabe Bio who creates vegetable-leather out of plant material (you can see an example in the picture). 👉 Energy transition and decarbonization, with an excellent presentation about biofuels by Cesar Barros from sugarcane research centre CTC - Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira and a peak into the future of engines running on hydrogen and the recycling of batteries by Andre Ferrarese of Tupy, a company that recently opened its European headquarters in Arnhem. 👉 Sustainable Aviation, where a Dutch touch was given to innovation through a keynote by Cleiton Diniz of Embraer, since Embraer has ongoing research collaborations with Delft University of Technology, NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. 👉 The new government strategy “Nova Industria Brasil”, which will boost Brazilian innovation with funds and credit lines. R&D funding body FINEP will play a big role in this plan and we talked with Marcelo Nicolas Camargo about the collaboration between Brazil and the Netherlands in the Eureka Network, which is implemented by FINEP from the Brazilian side. Reach out to us if you want to innovate with Brazil, we’d be happy to connect you. Jens K. This week, Jens K. visited Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) on behalf of Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil . CNPEM is one of only three of the most recent 4th generation synchrotron’s in the world. This electron accelerator emits a light of a broad part of the spectrum, which can filtered and used to analyze the atomic structure of all kinds of substances, like a gigantic microscope. It is a unique installation that demonstrates Brazil’s ambition to innovate. Synchrotron light can also be used in research topics relevant for the Netherlands. The synchrotron can, for example, visualize active sites of enzymes in great detail. This technique is applied to enzymes isolated from capivaras and manatees (sea cows), animals native from Brazil, that can break down plant material very well. When we understand those enzymes well, we can use them to produce more efficient biofuels. Another example is research on energy materials. Electrodes from electrolyzers are studied on nanoscale, so the efficiency to produce green hydrogen can be improved. Get in contact with the ia network if you are interested in those technologies. We can help you set up research collaborations with Brazil. Sub3DSkin: Dermal substitute & 3D model for diabetic chronic skin wounds is the name of the project of the research consortium led by Dr. Willeke Daamen and Dr. Ana Carolina Figueira. This is another example of the collaboration between the #Dutch and #Brazilian (São Paulo) #research organizations NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and FAPESP that together fund researchers to expand their knowledge on advanced biomaterials for healthcare applications. Healing skin wounds is a major challenge for diabetic patients. In this project the researchers will develop advanced collagen-based scaffolds with biomolecules that improve diabetic wound healing. In addition, a 3D model of human diabetic skin will be developed to test such skin substitutes in the laboratory with a high predictive value without the use of laboratory animals. https://lnkd.in/dm5ZsggF Health~Holland Robert Thijssen Jens K. The creation of a Green Hydrogen Hub in Ceará is steadily progressing, with a crucial role for the Complexo do Pecém and Port of Rotterdam! During the #FIEC Summit 2024, our team strengthened and forged the bonds needed for taking the next steps, in which both the private and the public sector has a role to play. The successful realization of this ambitious project is of direct importance; for the Netherlands, the EU, Brazil and Ceará. In the event's opening, in which our Deputy Ambassador Afke Mulder participated, the Governor emphasized the importance of the 🇳🇱🤝🇧🇷 partnership, especially the green energy corridor MoU signed in Ceará in 2023 with the Dutch Prime Minister and the Green Ports Partnership. Together with FIEC summit key-note speaker Nico Van Dooren, we also visited Pecém to get the latest state of the progress, the opportunities and the challenges faced. This visit only reinforced our commitment to driving the global energy transition forward and continuing our journey #SolvingGlobalChallengesTogether. In November we will be back in Fortaleza with a delegation of universities, companies and knowledge institutes, to further extend our collaboration in hydrogen research and development. #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #BrazilNetherlandsPartnership #GreenHydrogen

The Brazilian industry must also decarbonize. Not only to be CO2 neutral by 2050, but also to be efficient and competitive and to be able to export to, for example, the European Union. Here scope 3 is especially complicated: those are the emissions produced not by the company itself, but by companies in its supply-chain. This supply-chain is harder to control and often consists of smaller enterprises. The Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IA (Netherlands Innovation Network) attended the launch of a program called "Jornada de Descarbonização", journey to decarbonization. This programs aims specifically at small and medium-sized enterprises. Individually, these are not major producers of CO2, but together they are responsible for many scope 3 emissions. Companies affiliated with Fiesp - Federação das Indústrias do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo's industry umbrella organization, are offered a package to reduce their emissions. After an inventory of how many gases are emitted, a plan is made to reduce these emissions. To do so, Senai São Paulo and Sebrae-SP offer advice, online training and an online platform. Then, through Desenvolve SP, the company can apply for a credit to implement this plan. In this way, the industry itself ensures that emissions are reduced and that it remains efficient and competitive. Jens K. Daniël Burgers Robert Thijssen Tijmen Steensma

Collaboration between the Dutch Research Council NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and the São Paulo Research Foundation FAPESP resulted in jointly funded research by inter- and transdisciplinary teams of Dutch and Brazilian researchers and stakeholders. The 'Advanced Healthcare Materials' call of 2022 produced multiple international research projects that have recently started. One of them is called Nitric oxide releasing hydrogels and vascular prosthesis for cardiovascular applications (NORPROS). The research team is led by Patricia Y.W. Dankers and Marcelo Ganzarolli de Oliveira. Heart problems are a leading cause of death around the world. New approaches to mitigate the risks of heart operations include the development of innovative materials. With NOROPROS the researchers aim to develop hydrogel-based adhesives for topical application to the heart, which release active ingredients that allow better recovery of the heart muscle after coronary artery bypass surgery or after intracoronary stent implantation. Furthermore, they will develop fully soluble intracoronary stents, or stents coated with soluble polymers, that can deliver locally active ingredients to reduce the risk of thrombosis and prevent recurrent coronary vasoconstriction after stent angioplasty. https://lnkd.in/ek25pei2 Health~Holland Robert Thijssen Ernst-Jan Bakker Jens K. From 3-7 October 2022, Innovatie Attaché Netwerk Brazilië / Netherlands Innovation Attaché Network Brazil organized an innovation mission on Advanced Materials in Healthcare. We aligned this mission with the joint bilateral call for research: the 'Advanced Healthcare Materials' from the Dutch Research Council NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and the São Paulo Research Foundation FAPESP. It was a pilot within the Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IA (Netherlands Innovation Network), and proved successful: This innovation mission helped researchers and entrepreneurs to find project partners for this call. One of such projects is the Biomimetic spine fusion implants for back pain (BioFusion), which is led by researchers Miguel Castilho and Ana Paula Rosifini Alves. BioFusion is a collaborative research program between various universities and research institutes in the Netherlands and Brazil. The project aims to address intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, which is a leading cause of back pain. The aim of this PhD project is to develop calcium phosphate bioceramic-based biomaterials with osteoinductive properties and load-bearing capabilities that are suitable for 3D printing of the spinal cage. https://lnkd.in/eXnyf67N Health~Holland Robert Thijssen Ernst-Jan Bakker Jens K.
