You can read the article on the Freedom of Association Conference that I co-authored with Hanna Hanses via the following link. Örgütlenme Özgürlüğü Konferansı üzerine Hanna Hanses ile birlikte yazdığımız yazıyı linkten okuyabilirsiniz. “More than 40% of the population around the world are eligible to vote this year, but representative democracy, while essential, is not sufficient for lively democracies. The human-rights based order is turning into something new, where States claim more power. That’s why the separation of powers and the participation of society in democracy are crucial. To achieve this, civil society organisations need to be built, and need good relationships with government to complement voting.” https://lnkd.in/dqxWwh3h Türkiye Üçüncü Sektör Vakfı - Third Sector Foundation of Türkiye Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association Sivil Toplum Geliştirme Merkezi (STGM) - Civil Society Development Center

📢 Protection International is thrilled to be part of the newly launched European Union System for an Enabling Environment for Civil Society #EUSEE 🌍 In a global context where power-holders are increasingly obstructing the right to defend human rights, the EU SEE will support civil society in 86 countries to prevent and respond to legal and policy developments and other events that impact their ability to operate. The EU SEE programme comprises two main components designed to address these challenges: 1️⃣The first one aims to develop a civil society monitoring index and an early warning mechanism that will identify situations where the environment for civil society is changing. 2️⃣The second component is a Flexible Support Mechanism, which will provide funding for CSOs to address the challenges and opportunities posed by shifting civic space. Protection International will be responsible for co-implementing the second component, in partnership with Oxfam Novib, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation and the Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism - LAC. The first component will be implemented by Hivos, CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), Transparency International, Democracy Reporting International and Forus. I will present my report to UN Human Rights Council this Thursday at 10 am: Civil society organizations seek to express international solidarity ideas through regional and international solidarity networks but are increasingly facing challenges, including censorship, harassment, blacklisting, investigation, deportation, financial penalization or defunding, criminal prosecution and restriction of access to digital platforms to share solidarity ideas. In the present report, prepared pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 53/5, the Independent Expert on human rights and international solidarity, Cecilia M. Bailliet, confirms the growing trend of shrinking civic space in both the physical and the digital arenas, which has a negative impact on opportunities for expressing international solidarity. She provides recommendations to States, companies and international organizations in order to better support civil society’s right to engage in the exchange of international solidarity ideas, including a recommendation concerning the creation of a United Nations digital international solidarity platform. Suppression of the non-violent expression of international solidarity will only foment violence. States should create new channels for the expression of solidarity to support social cohesion. In the present report, the Independent Expert calls upon States to collaborate in the development of international solidarity law, through the adoption of the revised draft declaration on the right to international solidarity, to provide a foundation for reopening spaces for expressions of solidarity by civil society. At the summer university of Institute of Advanced Studies Koszeg the discussions over the last few days were on many topics related to the future of Europe, but one especially caught my attention. In one of the panels the erosion of the European moral framework and trust in institutions, was discussed. Looking at this framework the core values are very important and the European Union is founded on the following values: 1. human dignity 2. freedom (of movement, individual freedoms e.g. of thought, religion) 3. democracy 4. equality 5. rule of law (everything the EU does, is founded on treaties, voluntarily and democratically agreed by its EU countries.) 6. human rights (protected by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. These cover the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation, the right to the protection of your personal data, and the right to get access to justice.) To be totally honest with you, as a European citizen I did not even know we have these core values.... I found this quite shocking. And maybe many people are also unaware of these values which are very well chosen if you ask me. All six values are extremely important if we want to live in a world with peace and broad prosperity for all. Maybe it is time to communicate and revive these very important values. I start with this post and will continue thinking about how I - as a European citizen - can spread the values. These EU’s values are laid out in article 2 of the Lisbon Treaty and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. See also: https://lnkd.in/ePVBajsT

It is encouraging to see the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights working at normative refinement. Over the past few years, the ACHPR has produced valuable general comments, resolutions, and explanations that simplify human rights practice and advance normative standards. I wonder, however, if its protective mandate has been neglected. Delays in responding to communications and a substantial case backlog are serious enough to raise the possibility of denying justice through undue delays. https://lnkd.in/efFvfyCH

Here is another cutting of my European journey, with my participation in the 25th EU-NGO Forum on Human Rights as an EMA Alumni. I have written a short text about this intense experience (link in the post)
Two young GC graduates recently joined an important, big event bringing together over 200 participants: the 25th EU-NGO Forum on Human Rights in Brussels. As the theme was "Youth as actors of change for human rights", who is better placed to give us an account of the Forum? Structuring Global #Democracy: Political #Communities, #Universal #Human #Rights, and Transnational #Representation by Carol Gould The emergence of cross-border communities and transnational associations requires new ways of thinking about the norms involved in democracy in a globalized world. Given the significance of human rights fulfillment, including social and economic rights, I argue here for giving weight to the claims of political communities while also recognizing the need for input by distant others into the decisions of global governance institutions that affect them. I develop two criteria for addressing the scope of democratization in transnational contextsFcommon activities and impact on basic human rightsFand argue for their compatibility. I then consider some practical implications for institutional transformation and design, including new forms of transnational representation. https://lnkd.in/ea4pnszs

📰 In their latest report, EPC's Danielle Brady, Louisa Slavkova and Denitza Vidolova argue for embedding civic cohesion into key EU policies, including the Cohesion Policy, the Enlargement Policy, and the Rule of Law mechanism. They present strategies to strengthen civic cohesion, such as expanding support for initiatives, incorporating it into discussions on the Beyond GDP and well-being economy agendas, and integrating it into the EU's Cohesion Policy framework.
