The GPL’s Homelessness & Housing team is presenting at the National Alliance to End Homelessness’ annual conference (#NAEH2024). Join us on Tuesday, July 9 from 9:45 to 11:00 ET for our session “How Chicago Dug into Improving PSH Utilization” to learn how All Chicago Making Homelessness History (the Chicago CoC's lead organization) used the GPL’s diagnostic framework to increase successful Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) referrals. The session will also include a mini skills-building workshop. PSH is one of our communities’ most precious housing resources, and yet many jurisdictions struggle to maintain high occupancy. Connecting clients to PSH involves many stakeholders with diverse interests, and often relies on manual systems for tracking units and clients. The first step in improving complex PSH systems is to effectively diagnose challenges and understand where to prioritize improvements. In this session, attendees will learn how the GPL conducts diagnostic work to launch impactful solutions.

Each of the books in the 2024 Summer reading list highlights a particular aspect of housing instability and homelessness: causes, conditions, and solutions for the affordable housing crisis; Section 8’s impact and opportunities for improvement; policies that have led to current conditions; and policy changes that could address the complex issues of housing and homelessness. Collectively, this list can help policy makers, practitioners, advocates, and community members in becoming equipped with information and data that can help develop effective solutions to address homelessness and housing instability.

Pathlight HOME follows the Housing First approach, a proven model for addressing homelessness by prioritizing access to permanent, stable housing. Once housed, individuals can take advantage of wrap-around services to help support housing stability, employment, and recovery. This approach, compared with the Treatment First model, offers greater long-term housing stability, especially among people experiencing chronic homelessness. Did you know? The terms houselessness or homelessness includes more than just people who are living “rough” or on the streets. People can experience houselessness in many ways. Housing insecurity includes people who are unhoused but also includes those who may be: • Living in unsafe conditions that do not meet public health and safety standards • Accessing emergency shelters • Temporarily accommodated by couch surfing or at places such as a jail, medical or detox facility, or in transitional housing units • At risk of losing their homes or accommodation for any reason, such as being unable to afford rent increases or domestic violence Anyone experiencing any of these forms of housing insecurity is invited to complete the City's Homelessness Estimation Survey to help inform our work to prevent and respond to housing insecurity in our community. Learn more and complete the survey by May 15, at airdrie.ca/hes.

Encampments are growing across the country as people experiencing homelessness have nowhere else safe and appropriate to go. Budget 2024 should include a federally funded Encampment Response Program that supports people experiencing homelessness and living in encampments to quickly move into appropriate, safe, and secure housing. A federally funded response program would support communities to implement locally informed encampment resolution approaches that put housing and people at the centre of each response. Housing was the hot topic on last night’s episode of Q+A, and whilst the Launch Housing team weren’t actually in the hot seat, we are facing increasing pressure every day as the housing crisis impacts our most vulnerable Australians. In 2022/23, 37,872 unaccompanied children and young people engaged with homelessness services, including 9,232 children aged 15-17. Over 30% of these were First Nations children and young people. Kate Colvin asked the panel what level of homelessness is acceptable in Australia - the consensus was that zero is the only acceptable answer. Let’s hope that this bipartisan agreement leads to tangible action from all levels of government to end homelessness, including a specific commitment to support young people through the National Housing and Homelessness Plan 🤞🏼
