Pathlight HOME follows the Housing First approach, a proven model for addressing homelessness by prioritizing access to permanent, stable housing. Once housed, individuals can take advantage of wrap-around services to help support housing stability, employment, and recovery. This approach, compared with the Treatment First model, offers greater long-term housing stability, especially among people experiencing chronic homelessness. Unsheltered homelessness is a crisis that demands urgent, bold, pragmatic solutions. Reno is addressing homelessness as a humanitarian issue, building shelters for over 600 unhoused residents and providing access to jobs, services, and permanent housing once they’re indoors. With this approach, they’ve seen a 58% drop in unsheltered homelessness. We have proven solutions to get people off the streets and into safe, dignified housing quickly — but it will take all of us building the political will to end San Jose’s era of encampments. Housing was the hot topic on last night’s episode of Q+A, and whilst the Launch Housing team weren’t actually in the hot seat, we are facing increasing pressure every day as the housing crisis impacts our most vulnerable Australians. In 2022/23, 37,872 unaccompanied children and young people engaged with homelessness services, including 9,232 children aged 15-17. Over 30% of these were First Nations children and young people. Kate Colvin asked the panel what level of homelessness is acceptable in Australia - the consensus was that zero is the only acceptable answer. Let’s hope that this bipartisan agreement leads to tangible action from all levels of government to end homelessness, including a specific commitment to support young people through the National Housing and Homelessness Plan 🤞🏼

Reflecting on our annual report, it's clear: numbers only scratch the surface of the homelessness crisis. While we housed hundreds last year, homelessness remains a fluid experience with many teetering on the edge daily. It's not just about housing those currently experiencing homelessness; we must also focus on preventing new entries into homelessness. This requires a shift from counting heads to understanding the complex factors at play. Let's use these numbers as a catalyst for change and work together to create a more equitable world.

One of the really nice things about All Home's framework for how to plan investments around homelessness is that it recognizes a simple reality: you cannot decrease unsheltered homelessness without preventing more people entering (or returning to) homelessness. There is no question we need more permanent, deeply affordable homes. There is also no question that we need interim and temporary solutions that reduce harm and provide safety. Where the public sometimes doesn't see the full picture is that a good deal of the crisis is fueled by first-time homeless experiences and people who return to the street for a variety of complicated but addressable reasons. This plan has been around for a bit, but it's worth sharing just to help people see an important part of the picture in California - the critical, ongoing necessity of dramatic increases in prevention. https://lnkd.in/gV_D6FuA

The "Lucky Country" must establish a more structured and coordinated Approach among agencies, businesses, corporates, government, entrepreneurs and individuals to tackle the homelessness issue. Having homeless shelters and/or building social housing is only an important part of the broader solution. As we know -in some cases- mental health issues are major contributing factors as well, to the extent that some "choose" to remain homeless. These should not deter us from -at least- reducing it at its minimum expression. It is also important to highlight, learn and integrate best practices such as The Salvation Army, Oracle, Foodbank Australia, Woolworths Supermarkets, Vinnies CEO Sleepout SA Ozcare #followers
Our Child Homelessness Snapshot 2024 highlights how lack of access to housing, income support that is too low, and inadequate funding of homelessness services is resulting in homeless children and families being unable to escape homelessness. This #HW2024 we need action on social housing investment and increased income support, and significant new investment in homelessness services to meet demand.
