“Exponential ecology” was the given phrase when designing UC San Diego’s Theatre District Living and Learning Neighborhood. At every design decision, at every scale, the project embodied a connection to nature and place to promote human wellness and responsibility to the planet. The HKS design team led a series of stakeholder sessions to develop a project programing, employing primary and secondary research to address key outcomes to enhance the student experience. Emma Greenland presented her first CPD of the year to the team at Innes Associates Architecture & Urban Design this week.
This Lunch and Learn session delivered via TEAMS showcased our work and research on 'Improving access to listening in mainstream schools' We provide practical guidance on how schools and architects can meet their duties to anticipate the needs of children with special hearing or communication needs (shcn) in accordance with key regulations and standards using a 'reasonable' adjustments approach.
It was really useful to discuss Innes' recent experience on Post Occupancy Evaluation visits with Natalia Klus, Simon Innes and Corrie-Anne Rounding, share some common watch areas for acoustics which don't fall into the normal scope of compliance, and explore ideas for efficient acoustic finishes to meet inclusive standards.
Thank you for virtually hosting us and we hope you found it informative!
For more information on our Lunch and Learn sessions and to book your team in follow this link:-https://lnkd.in/ePq58mEZ We can deliver a session via TEAMS if this means more colleagues can attend (particulary where you have more than one office base), otherwise we travel to you and provide lunch!

We have documented the construction of a wide range of education facilities, from primary schools to universities. Our systems capture the entire building process, recording the development of spaces where future generations will learn and grow. Each project, whether a primary school, middle school, high school, college, or university, is recorded in detail, showing the building's progress until it is a completed educational institution. The footage serves as a visual record of the work that goes into creating environments for education, highlighting the construction milestones that shape these vital community assets. Through time-lapse, the transformation of architectural designs into functional learning spaces is preserved, creating a lasting record of the development of educational infrastructure.

Evolution of unplanned pathways: an example of how unplanned development and historical changes in key pathways and green spaces can become integral to a built environment layout over time.
The Oval and Long Walk at Ohio State University were not included in the original campus design but developed organically over time. As new buildings were constructed, students began creating their own paths across the grass, which influenced the eventual layout of sidewalks, including the Long Walk. The campus was initially designed like an English manor, with pathways intersecting what is now the Oval.
These features shape the mental map of the university, guiding movement and serving as key reference points. Their evolution reflects the changing needs and formalization of campus navigation.

One day in the field, one day in the classroom, One day as a student, one day as a teacher, but always learning.
One day in the studio, where design, creativity, and technology blend, And then... one day back in the field, one day at the office.
This rhythmic dance of roles and settings is more than my routine; it's my poem of gratitude. 🍃 Each shift brings new perspectives, each day offers fresh insights.
Whether I'm sharing knowledge with my students in Design Studio I or navigating the intricacies of architectural surveys, I find joy in every moment.
This journey weaves together the many threads of my professional and personal growth, reminding me that every experience, every challenge, is a verse in the ongoing poem of life.
Here's to the beauty of learning, teaching, and creating, no matter where we are or what hat we wear. May we all find such poetry in our daily lives. 🌟 #LifeAsAPoem#AlwaysLearning#GratefulHeart#DesignAndTechnology#ArchitecturalJourney#EducatorLife#CreativeProcess
