"Swedish fashion giant H&M has come out against a proposal by the world’s most influential body on corporate climate targets that would allow companies to use carbon offsets to help meet their environmental goals. In a letter to the Science Based Targets initiative’s board of trustees, Leyla Ertur, H&M’s head of sustainability, said the company was concerned about the possibility of companies using carbon offsets to lower their overall carbon emissions by purchasing credits for carbon removal projects, saying that action should be taken by companies within their value chains to reduce greenhouse gas emissions." “The decision weakens corporate climate pledges and makes real decarbonization efforts within value chains less attractive,”... "allowing companies to replace decarbonization action with the purchase of credits would “deter the investments and innovation we need to achieve systemic change.” "H&M has been one of the SBTi’s backers, supporting the climate group since 2019. As we continue expanding our endeavours with sustainability, we’re proud to announce we have received our first, full, global Scope 1, 2 and 3 CO2 inventory and been verified to ISO 14064-1.   External consultants WSP assisted us with a full inventory of our global #CO2 footprint and this was then verified by Carbonology® Ltd.   This comes in the wake of our gap analysis performed last year and identifying where there were areas for improvement. In addition to capturing our CO2 footprint, we created a full GHG Management Process report, which features details on how we capture and collect information on our greenhouse gas emissions, why we’re doing it and how we use the data. 📈   These acknowledgements of our efforts motivate us all at Reed & Mackay. As responsible corporate citizens, we believe it’s our duty to maximise our positive impacts and contribute to a better future for all.   That’s why we remain committed to setting near- and long-term companywide emission reduction targets to be net zero by 2050 with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We have 24 months from our commitment date of September 2022 📅 to develop and submit our targets to SBTi for validation. Here’s how they are making a difference: ⏱ 1. 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬:  They aim to reduce absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across their value chain by 56% by 2030 and by at least 90% by 2040, using 2019 as the baseline. ⏱2. 𝐍𝐞𝐭-𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥: By 2040, they plan to reach net-zero emissions, balancing out the remaining 10% of unavoidable emissions through carbon dioxide removals. These goals were verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTI) in September 2022. ⏱3. 𝐔𝐍𝐅𝐂𝐂𝐂 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: As members of the steering committee of the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action under the UNFCCC-WGEO Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) MENA and SA, they advocate for industry-wide policies that limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. ⏱4. 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Makes funding available to supplier factories to invest in the technologies and processes needed to reduce energy demand and replace fossil fuels. - 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝: The Fashion Climate Fund by the Apparel Impact Institute drives collective action to tackle supply chain GHG emissions, with H&M Group (Hennes & Mauritz AB) being a lead funder. - 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: In partnership with Guidehouse, other brands, and investors, they share the financial responsibility of funding suppliers to decarbonize through the Future Supplier Initiative. ⏱5. 🌳 Our latest annual Sustainability Report is out! In this report, we enhance and build upon our inaugural report from last year, with transparency and accountability at the heart of our framework. This strategy will help drive quantifiable, meaningful impacts across sustainability topics, including our safety culture, greenhouse gas performance, approach to ethics, responsible sources, stakeholder engagement and more. Highlights include: 📋 Completed Fluence’s first climate risk assessment and published the company’s first Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) report. 🌐 Increased disclosures tied to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Sustainability Accounting Standards (SASB) compared to our 2022 Sustainability Report. 👣 Expanded greenhouse gas footprint analysis beyond Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions into Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. ⛓️ Implemented a responsible sourcing framework to enhance engagement with suppliers and reinforce ethical practices throughout the supply chain. ✈️ Mitigated 60% of the greenhouse gas emissions from employee business air travel during fiscal year 2023.  It was our mission to create a report that demonstrates where we are on our sustainability journey and our efforts ahead in continuing our legacy of innovation, and transforming the way we power our world.
