What a densely packed couple of days it’s been at the Global Fashion Summit - Global Fashion Agenda in Copenhagen. As in industry we already know what needs to be done, we have done the research and collected the data. Now we have to act on this. We need to stop talking and start doing. As Edwin Keh put it: version 1.0 may not turn out perfect, it may be messy but at this stage action trumps perfection. We are all like mice that have decided to put a bell on the cat, we now need to work out how to do it! Systemic change needs to be driven from the inside out as well as from the outside in through legislation. Every individual, organisation and company has the power to make a change and to improve existing inefficiencies. 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬? Inspired by the article below, written by Bio-Leadership Fellow Caroline Till, we held a powerful session with our mycelium of Fellows last week around this question. We were fortunate to hear from three of our brilliant Fellows who have experienced the shift away from corporate sustainability firsthand. Anuradha Chugh shared her experience as the former CEO of Pukka, which was sold off by Unilever to a private equity firm in a move that Anu describes as ‘real world, hard commerce value creation.’ Verônica Manguinho de Souza, formerly of Natura &Co., spoke about sustainability in Brazilian multinational companies and the patterns she is finding in corporate decision-making around these topics. Key issues included seeing sustainability as a department, not a mindset, and a focus on short-term gains. And Charlotte Sewell ⚡🔶🌿 shared her experience working with the B Corp movement to try and influence big business through a group of ‘pace-setter’ businesses. She wonders whether the brakes coming on (by big business, by the dominant system) is actually a sign of a bigger transition that is about to arrive. (A positive one, we hope!) It was a brilliant session that both challenged and energised our community.
