Saturday, April 20, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, is our day for an ALA-Oregon Chapter fun-filled social event full of camaraderie, bowling, and food! Register by April 10! Several of you participated in past events supporting the Sunshine Division, and we want to continue that support! We are hoping that you can bring one or more non-perishable food items for donation to the Sunshine Division as your entrance to this event—the more the better! This is an exciting opportunity to connect with your fellow members and business partner colleagues while we continue our support of a local community partner. Perhaps a bit of competitive bowling or competitive eating—who knows! Knowing that weekends are often family time, our event is open to your +1 and kids. The Grand Central Bowling venue should be a fun way to mix and mingle, enjoy some good food, enjoy bowling at your leisure, or take in a few arcade game activities. Space is limited so register at oregonala.org EARLY! Be sure to register yourself as well as any family members who will join. Please email Lori Hughes at lori.hughes@millernash.com with any questions. Let her know if you will be bringing any children so that we can plan the menu and arcade opportunities. Let’s kick off spring together, support our local community, and spend time with the best in our community -- you! Sunshine Division Food Donation Recommendations: "We rely heavily on food donations to make our mission possible. We are always looking for the following non-perishable items: canned meats, pasta, rice, cereal, soup/broth, peanut butter, canned/dried beans, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cooking oil and shelf-stable milk. To ensure food safety we cannot use: Noncommercial or repackaged items, perishable items, open or used items, alcoholic beverages, damaged or unlabeled cans, homemade items." #networking #ALABuzz #LegalManagment #FoodDonation

AuDHD modern day philosopher, writer and editor, non binary, trying to find my place in a world where I’m not “enough” anything to really belong
I recently visited a local food bank. It is a food bank that picks up produce at a local grocery store. They used to pickup meats near expiration too. They have freezers and as an under-supplied, overburdened food bank, the need is definitely present. In the last six months the same grocery store stopped discounting meats to 50% and started only discounting them to 30%. I know for a fact this has led to greater discard of expired meat. They no longer allow the food bank to pick up near expiration meats. People who wouldn’t be able to afford those foods in the first place, imaginary profits and losses that never existed are their “reasoning” for throwing food away instead. People in need are not the enemy. People in need aren’t hoarding their money greedily and eagerly waiting at the donation doors. The (potential) merger of Albertsons and Fred Meyer terrifies me. They’re already coordinating their sales to justify “see we’re competing with each other and will keep doing so if you let us merge” What all shoppers have realized? Their prices were heavily inflated since first word of this merger to allow “sales” that don’t lose them a penny. Grocery prices are already unattainable for many and only worsening.

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM

“My name is Denys. I'm food services manager at Main Street Project. I'm on the 4th year working here now. We are working on the partnerships with different donors and getting food to people who need it the most. It’s challenging to find right the fit for people who are unable to cook on their own. We do have some access to raw foods, but many of our participants don't have ability to cook that food. Another challenge is we have a very tiny kitchen that supports the operation of feeding on average 500 plus people a day. The biggest challenge, I would say, is to get folks the right nutrients of food. Food insecurity is huge and has become even more of a problem here in Winnipeg. There is an uptick in using the food banks. This tells me that food insecurity has grown a lot. We see much younger people coming over to the food bank. We see families with little kids that are coming to food bank as well. Right now, we are facing a higher inflation, food cost is way, way higher than what we experienced before and our food donations is way lower than we have ever seen it. I've done calculations for our shelter. When we feed people three times a day, came down to $0.71 per person per day for three times. Quite often, people will think oh, I have to give at least $10 or $20 to make a difference. No, it's not the case. Even $1.00 will help somebody have a meal today.” Your purchase of 50/50 tickets supports Main Street Project’s food programming, which provides over 1,000 meals each day to the community. Ticket sales close end of the day on January 31! Draw takes place February 1. Buy your tickets today: https://ow.ly/Txkm50QsINy #MSPBuildingStability #Winnipeg #Manitoba

We aim to empower women through providing accommodation, psycho-social support, employment, and training.
Did You Know each meal served during our #GivingbackFridays costs just R14 per plate? As part of our external services, we focus extensively on food security. #GivingBackFridays is our weekly dedication to serving a hot, nutritious meal to those in need in our community. Currently, our #GivingBackFridays costs R7000 per week. We serve about 500 people, which comes down to R14 per plate served. A little does go a long way, and although rising food prices continue to affect our budget, we work hard to stretch every rand by negotiating with grocery suppliers to get the lowest prices on food. How You Can Help: Your contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. Here's how you can help us continue serving our community: Donate Food: Our soup kitchen menu and food quantities for #givingbackfridays are available on request. DM or email us info@fridahartley.org Sponsor a #GivingBackFriday: Every rand donated goes directly towards purchasing food and supplies. A SARS section 18A certificate can be issued. Get involved, and let's work together to eliminate hunger in our communities. #GivingBackFridays #CommunityOutreach #foodsecurity https://lnkd.in/dmiT6vGa

Each day we hand out bagged meals to our clients who work offsite along with individuals who come to our front door seeking a meal. As summer approaches, and our need for bagged meals increases, you can help us feed the hungry by joining our Meal Bag Program and packing meals that we can hand out to those who need them! Here's how you can get started: 1. Pack lunches in a clear Ziploc bag and fill them with a granola bar or cracker pack, a small bag of chips or pretzels, a fruit cup packed in fruit juice (not syrup); raisins; or dried fruit 2. Please purchase items to make a sandwich (loaves of bread, turkey or ham slices, etc.) but do not pre-make the sandwiches 3. Optional— add a note of encouragement to let the person receiving the bagged meal know they are loved! 4. Knowing in warmer months we can hand out up to 200 meal bags a day, we kindly ask that you prepare and deliver at least 40 meals at a time. 5. Schedule a delivery time in advance at carlat@raleighrescue.org or 984-272-2001 We're so grateful for the generosity of so many who have helped us sustain this program! And, the work must continue. Please join us in providing for the Raleigh community! In Michigan, nearly 12% of people face food insecurity, and many of our community members face barriers to accessing nutritious food. Food insecurity has soared over the past few years, making it more important than ever to create a future where our food system is equitable, sustainable, and equipped to meet southeast Michigan’s needs. At our foundation, we support a number of nonprofit organizations, including Fair Food Network, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Forgotten Harvest, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Make Food Not Waste, who are working to increase food access, destigmatized food insecurity, and provide education and resources so that people throughout our region can thrive. "The first step to counteract this waste is to ask questions and identify what is being squandered in your area. What resources are being wasted? How can they be rescued and redirected to help your community? If there are existing nonprofits that address this general issue, consider if there are areas they’re not covering, or people not being served." https://lnkd.in/gkpr4GeQ
