"We need everyone to understand the issues that we're facing, get us all on the same page so that we can move the needle." Lark Mallory, former president and CEO of the Affordable Housing Trust for Columbus and Franklin County (AHT) and leader of the new Mallory Economic Development Advisors, calls for a sweeping, cross-sector effort to meet the housing needs of Central Ohio's growing population. Homeport has selected Lark Mallory as the honoree for our 2024 Voice & Vision celebration, recognizing her tireless work with AHT to fund housing solutions that lift up our most cost burdened. Ahead of our event, we sat down with her to hear her insight into the incredible growth Central Ohio is experiencing and the actions we need to take collectively to build for a more equitable future. Join Lark Mallory and Homeport at our 10th annual Voice & Vision on October 16, 2024.

A few days ago Stephen A Smith decided to not only act as though Detroit is a wasteland outside of downtown, when he walked it back he basically mentioned that “He understands Detroit because the suburbs are nice.” On Instagram I posted a video that’s a snippet of a reel I use to show how beautiful Detroit is in many neighborhoods. If that interests you, you can check it out here (https://lnkd.in/eh-Z8gt9) On linkedin, I want to have a more indepth and tactical discussion. Detroit is a city of peaks and valleys, but what is not is your grandparents' misconception of it from the 80’s. Some neighborhoods have been beautiful since the ’40s. The idea that “a city doesn’t have value once a certain demographic leaves” is steeped in bigotry and racism. Take that however you want. And yes, Black people can internalize that racism too. Detroit didn’t suddenly company comeback to life when a certain billionaire came back or a certain guy became mayor. It back “More digestable to people who so themselves in their explaination for the vision of Detroit.” A more welcoming city for a demographic that left. I am not going to say that Detroit has not risen to a degree from the actions of some visionaries. That would be intellectually dishonest. What I will say is that there seems to be a DISTINCT difference in the time of people the powers that be (government, philanthropy, corporations) will invest in…or see as worthy of catalyst. In the last 3-5 years or so I’ve seen a shift in the understanding that groups have been and are being left behind. A slow understanding of why and the racial, economic, and bias that perpetuates that. Which is heartening. But the feeling that Stephen A Smith has is mostly a feeling, perpetuated by a news cycle that continues to spread that nonsense, promoted by folks who’s history memory of the city is outdated, and are unfortunately closer to Stephen A Smith than the boots on the ground working to preserve and grow the city every day. Lastly, Lions goin’ to the Super Bowl! Fight witcha self about it. #EndRant

It is not always easy to know which bottle is shampoo and which is conditioner. In fact, the bottles are made to look and feel exactly the same and the fonts are typically tiny. When Sumaira Latif and Susan B. explained the tactile language they created, so anyone can feel the difference between personal care bottles, we knew we had to get the products into the hands of our students. This innovation resonated deeply with Gayemarie Brown, Jennifer Sagalyn, and me, because it was designed by and for people who are blind or low vision. Procter & Gamble's tactile system is simple and during an afterschool discussion group, our students had it mastered. They knew four stripes meant shampoo for lots of hair and multiple dots meant conditioner. With these products, our students had the opportunity for greater independence and that helped build confidence leading up the the Prom. Watch the video to see P&G pull out all of the stops to make the Perkins School for the Blind Prom special. It was a lot of fun to work on this with Aisling Tietze and it was the most meaningful Perkins Access project I have worked on during the ten years I have been at Perkins. My favorite part is that these products are not special order, they are available on the same shelves where you buy your shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash. So, take a few minutes to learn more about this initiative and understand the impact it has, because July is Disability Pride month and there is always something to learn from innovations for the disability community and how they can even upgrade a routine, daily activity like showering. The final day of Madison Berkeley 's The REal Juggle campaign. We are so proud of this campaign and how brilliantly Clare Coe née Doughty and Jack Hechle have hosted. We want to thank everyone who has contributed and supported us. This was a controversial topic for Madison Berkeley to raise and they could have shied away from it. It is worth saying that we had many people wanting to participate in the campaign series but they couldn't get the clearance from their organisations or they were worried that being a part of this might affect them adversely in their workplace. We felt really sad about this but it just proved that what we were doing was right and needed to be discussed openly so that those people are able to have a voice in the future. So for those organisations that were brave enough to support their talent in being part of such a strong campaign...we salute you! Supporting and understanding the challenges that staff with families face can only benefit a business and you all appear to know this. Also a huge huge thank you to CoStar's Luke Haynes and CoStar UK editor Paul Norman who have been fantastic media partners. Next week we will share some of the articles again in case they were missed. Thank you Rapleys, Related Argent, British Land, Knight Frank, Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), Kontor, Derwent London, SEGRO plc, Get Living, Oxford University Development, for your support. Please do continue to listen to the series (link in the post below), comment and share with your networks. Keep this conversation going. #realestaterecruitment #flexibleworking #workingparents #parentsinrealestate #workingmums #realestate
“I do know people (males) in my team who talk about prior experience at other firms (in leaving early to collect their children or sharing childcare with their partners) and feeling negativity from those around them. It does exist” It is the final day of Madison Berkeley’s The REal Juggle campaign supported by CoStar UK and what a week it has been. Thanks so much for your support and please keep sharing the audio interviews. They will remain on https://lnkd.in/er6XEMfw to ensure that this topic remains high on the agenda and we hope to continue to revisit it throughout the year. Talking about and raising the issues that face parents in real estate is so important. Conversations breed change. For those who have listened all week to the 20-30-minute audio interviews which focus on juggling being a parent with working in senior positions in the real estate industry you will know that no topic has been off-limits so far. These audio interviews are a must-listen for everyone in the industry regardless of gender or seniority. We hope you will share it with your community as well as add your thoughts and comments to the conversation. Today in our final round table discussion co-founder of Madison Berkeley Clare Coe née Doughty and colleague Jack Hechle welcome Rob Codling Senior fund manager at Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM) and Alexander Keith Director at SEGRO plc to the table.
