Patience: A Key Ingredient in Legal Internships Devanshi Parashar reminds us that whether it's securing internships, finding meaningful work during them, or adjusting to new professional environments, patience is essential. This advice resonates deeply with me as I navigate the complexities of starting a career in law. It was a great opportunity in my career to join WICCI National Legal Awareness Council . Patience not only helps us persevere through the challenges of finding and excelling in internships but also teaches us the resilience needed for a successful legal career. Let's stay patient and persistent, embracing each step of our professional journey with positivity and determination. #lawstudents #lawschool #internships #lawfirm #patienceisavirtue

Jokes aside, as summer has officially begun, many college students are embarking on internships which can vary widely in experience and compensation. Unfortunately, unpaid internships are often out of reach for students with financial constraints. I've discovered from conversations that students often pursue these opportunities at a significant financial loss when you factor in the cost of living, especially in cities like DC. Internships are crucial for career development. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 50% to 60% of eligible interns transition to full-time employees. Ensuring that interns are paid not only supports their financial well-being but also promotes greater equity in opportunities for students. It's time to rethink internships as a valuable investment in the future workforce so all students have the opportunity to gain critical experience without financial barriers. #internships #highereducation #careerdevelopment #nace

Reminder: Feedback is a powerful tool! During internships, seek feedback from your seniors as this will help you complete the task as per the expectations and build meaningful relations. During competitions/papers, etc., seek feedback from your teammates and mentors to improve your skills. During exams, seek feedback from your faculties, mentors, and seniors to write better answers and grow otherwise too. Opening ourselves to constructive criticism and eventually working on it will help us go a long way! #lawstudents #lawschool #internships #feedback

As a grandmaster and a verified genius in chess, my professional development and strategic approach to my career are likened to this thought of a chess game. Every sacrificing and calculated move is thought through with the graver strategy. Today, I thought of addressing the debated issue of unpaid internships from an unorthodox perspective. Still, I may throw an entirely new light on this issue that has been discussed so hotly. For instance, chess players do it all the time; sacrificing a piece—say, even a queen—though rather painful- is expected to gain a better position on the board. That said, you could agree if somebody said that an unpaid internship is a tactical sacrifice for young professionals. Still, this sacrifice is not meaningless; it is a conceded concession made on purpose, and it is supposed to bring the benefit of acquiring a superior position in the professional field. This was a tradition in which the concept of apprenticeship involved unpaid labor, and in addition to that, a payment had to be made from the apprentice to the master. This is a tradition in which learning from a master and gaining skills and perceptions rarely offered in textbooks or classrooms are valued. These days, the unpaid internship offers the same experiential learning opportunity but at no financial cost for the knowledge. The criticism that unpaid internships are exploitative ignores the intangible value that they create. They offer a platform far more unique than merely paying the money, where one can gain practical skills and network with professionals while learning the operational dynamics of an industry. In chess, this is akin to gaining positional advantage and opening up lines that would otherwise remain closed. An unpaid internship represents an investment in one's intellectual capital, which holds great value in today's knowledge economy. Like a chess player who plans multiple moves, a person pursuing this option invests in their future capacity and marketability. Admittedly, an unpaid internship represents a particular financial burden; however, very often, one must be in place to realize the future possibilities this kind of long-term investment can bring. Like a chess player has to suffer and come under pressure to win, sometimes, young professionals have to go under the challenges of unpaid internships to build a platform for future success. Herein lies the root complexity of the debate surrounding unpaid internships: most of them appear, if not through the eyes of a strategically thinking chess grandmaster, a view that exposes its actual potential as an invaluable stepping stone in a career. In that early handling of these sacrifices and challenges, one can come to the professional domain as a player to be reckoned with.
Please stop offering unpaid internships, young adults have lives and finances to worry about too. Every person doesn’t come from money and can do free work. Pay your interns for their work. You can’t expect them to do work for you a whole summer and survive off of nothing but just college credit. Yes, experience is nice but everything in this world costs money. 🤷🏽♀️ #internships #unpaid #students #recentgrads #college

If an applicant is doing work that contributes to your organization, they should be paid. Period. We shouldn’t even have to introduce barriers or present contrasting evidence (limited resource applicants vs. financially benefited applicants,…etc) to prove that today, in 2024, it is an equitable practice to ensure people are being valued and compensated for the duties they perform.
