Food is magic. I love the transformation that food represents as simple ingredients become alluring aromas and delightful bites. And I love how food brings people together, creates memories, and transports us through time. In 2019, I started leading Off The Beaten Path Food Tours of Central Square, Cambridge. I loved learning the stories behind the restaurants and being a neighborhood ambassador for guests from near and far. The pandemic paused our tours in 2020, but when it was safe to resume, I helped reopen our tours and develop new routes, especially after so many beloved food spots had closed. My favorite part of the job was building relationships with our restaurant partners. Together, we would dream about what new tour stop could look like - what would be the perfect bite and sip to experience the vision and yearn to come back for more. And of course the logistics - how big should the smoothie be, when should we arrive, what other sparkles could we add to the experience... When you work as a guide and tour developer, you start to see food differently. You zoom out from individual dishes and see restaurants within their neighborhoods, their cities, their foodsheds. You appreciate the dreamers and workers that make it all happen, with their moving stories and weird favorites on the menu. Food becomes experiential, a testament to time, place, and spirit. This month, I'm ending my time with Off The Beaten Path so that I can focus on other parts of my professional life. But I couldn't leave without a last hurrah: helping develop an evening tour of Central Square, which adds new food stops to the mix and is more accessible for the post-work crowd, date nights, and just an evening on the town. Check out this new tour along with our other offerings, and at the very least, the next time you walk through your neighborhood, find a restaurant you haven't tried yet, ask for the staff's favorite thing on the menu, and give it a try. You never know what magic might happen. https://lnkd.in/gV4ZVXVm PS: Shout out to the founders Lizzie and Sam, and all the amazing guides I worked with over the years! You are all a source of inspiration!
Our first evening Central Square Food Tour starts tonight! Wonderful for colleagues, dates, friends and family! Book here: https://lnkd.in/daMQSdsS

On a mission to unite communities, local businesses and authorities to create thriving local economies… Place Making | Community Champion | Start Up & SME Business Coach
I recently attended a seminar with the Institute of Place Management in conjunction with British and Australian Placemakers. What do Placemakers in the UK and Australia have in common? Well, it turns out a lot! It really struck me how we share many of the same challenges despite being on different sides of the world. It’s so important that we have these conversations not just within our own communities, but far and wide too. More conversation invites better ideas and solutions. And the more we talk about these challenges, the more change we’ll see.

Here's what our Board President, Gerardo (Gary) Sanchez, Senior Director of Community Impact, Equity, and Public Affairs at Visit Dallas, had to say about his involvement at 24HourDallas: ''My role with 24HourDallas began in 2017 (before 24HourDallas had its name), when there was an initiative to enforce a “Late Hours Overlay” on businesses opened past 12am, with the intent of addressing parking, noise, alleged crimes, and other claims. The ordinance was flawed and was drafted with no input from residents, neighborhood businesses, property owners or employees. Organized by the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association, there was a strong opposition to this ordinance, officially called, “Stop The Curfew.” Thanks in big part to the hundreds of service industry works who showed up at Dallas City Hall to voice their opposition, it was defeated. The ordinance went through the process of being heard at council committees, but it was ultimately dropped. The idea of taking a pro-active approach on addressing these matters soon arose, and in January 2020, the first 24HourDallas member meeting occurred at the Omni Hotel. Although 24HourDallas has grass-roots origins, it’s had tremendous effects on Dallas, and it’s been fantastic to see many of our ideas come true – our Good Neighbor Initiative and Copper Star Certification program (now in its third year); the hiring of the city’s Manager of Nighttime Economy and Responsible Hospitality, and more recently, the publishing of our first Nighttime Economic Study, which demonstrated that in 2023, the Dallas nightlife scene contributed $15 billion in direct economic impact, and when considering induced effects, the overall indirect economic influence was $24.4 billion and the support of 256,000 jobs. As the current President of the 24HourDallas board of directors, I’m extremely proud of the work we’ve done, and moved by everyone’s commitment to our mission: “to create a safe, vibrant, and diverse nighttime culture for businesses, residents, and guests,” because the nighttime really is for everyone.'' If you share the same passions or want to join Gary as a member today, visit 24hourdallas.org! #TheNighttimeIsForEveryone
