From Hollie Russon Gilman, Ph.D.: The Trust is a new philanthropic collaborative and learning network with a simple mission: support local efforts that bring residents together to solve challenges they decide are most critical for their community to thrive. What local issues do the nonprofit partners in Spur Local's 2024 Class work to address? Short answer: Everything! Many of these issues are inter-connected. This year's community-based organizations preserve and elevate stories of local history, equip the next generation to be engaged civic leaders, cultivate vibrant regional food systems, and directly provide services and support across our region. Together, they work holistically to make Greater Washington more equitable, reminding us that collaboration strengthens our collective impact. Congratulations to Vetto Casado, the Shifting Power, Advancing Justice team, and all at The Boston Foundation for this tremendous work. And thanks to Vetto to posing great questions in his reflection. They are for all of us in #philanthropy to consider - here are some modifications for me, relevant to my work in the Massachusetts Early Childhood Funder Collaborative: * How can we collectively position ourselves and leverage our resources to ensure our work hits its substantial potential? * How do we come together as a collective? What is the cadence? And how do we ask the right questions going forward? * How can we support the table setting? How can we bring chairs - and tables - that we don't occupy, but to allow others immersed in the work to construct a vision and definition of success that we can then support?

🌟 Empowering Communities: Bridging the Gap Between Corporations and Non-Profits 🌟 As professionals, we often find ourselves deeply committed to fostering positive change in our communities. Today, I want to share a vision that holds immense potential for impact: the powerful collaboration between corporations and non-profit organizations. Regardless of our roles within our respective companies, we possess the ability to forge meaningful partnerships that can uplift and empower those in need. If there's a non-profit you deeply resonate with, take a moment to envision the transformative impact that could be achieved by joining forces. For me, that organization is Cradles To Crayons Inc, specifically their Philadelphia Chapter. Their dedication to providing essential resources and educational support to children in need resonates deeply, particularly in a city like Philadelphia, where over 300,000 children grapple with poverty. It's crucial to recognize that these children are not just statistics; they are the future of our community. By empowering them with the tools they need to thrive, we're investing in a brighter tomorrow for everyone. So, I urge you: if there's a cause close to your heart, don't hesitate to reach out. Forge connections between your company and the non-profit sector. Together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change that reverberates far beyond our individual efforts. We have been hired as a consultant by RootED Denver (a nonprofit organization supporting great schools in Denver) to gauge community interest in our concept within DPS communities. Over the next two months, we will be contacting and meeting with schools, community-based nonprofits, neighborhood groups, and neighborhood organizations to get their feedback on the following questions: From your perspective, is declining enrollment due to population shifts a problem? What is the degree/extent of the problem? What is the shared understanding of the problem? How should the problem be approached (our model incentivizes districts to participate as partners, lifts community desires, finds compromises through information and neutral facilitation, builds cross-sector coalitions, and funnels resources into communities from foundations through community nonprofits)? What would be an adequate timeline for community-led work in resolving the problem (in the presentation, we use a hypothetical timeline of two years)? A transformative vision is taking shape in Saginaw County, one that is set to transform the very fabric of our community. Led by a coalition of passionate community leaders from education, business, healthcare, and community non-profit, the Community Engagement and Inclusion Council (CEIC) is poised to create a brighter, more inclusive, and equitable future for all in our county. From grassroots conversations to impactful action, 2021 marked the genesis of a movement in Saginaw County. Community leaders, driven by a collective ambition for progress, spearheaded the creation of a robust diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) vision and strategic plan. This strategic plan provides a roadmap that promises to propel Saginaw County toward a future where diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice are cornerstones, not aspirations. A new framework from the Build Healthy Places Network lifts up racial healing as an actionable approach to shift power and center a community vision for health and equity. A new Guide to Racial Healing: The REPAIR Framework for Community-Institution Solidarity in Racial Healing can be used by leaders in the health care, community development and philanthropic sectors to work with community development corporations to determine the most effective ways to rectify past harms done to historically marginalized and under-resourced communities in ways that are both tangible and sustainable. Did you know that Black people in England & Wales are THREE times more likely to live in social housing (Census 2021)? Black South West Network's 2020 Housing research also identifies that Black and Minority households also experience difficulties in getting issues surrounding housing conditions addressed due to numerous factors such as language barriers, racial prejudice, and economic barriers. As part of our practical community work, BSWN paired up with Bristol City Council and numerous other Bristol-based charities to provide Black and Minoritised communities direct access to City Council housing officers. In providing culturally-sensitive, safe spaces for these issues to be addressed, we hope to help alleviate the ongoing housing disparities experienced by racialised folk. We've already had two sessions this year (Barton Hill and Fishponds), providing assistance to well over 20 social housing tenants in matters like HomeChoice, Repairs & Maintenance, and ASB!
