Fellow Tennessee Educators:
For the first time in the United States, firearms are the leading cause of death for children under the age of 19. Our nation’s schools, communities, and families cannot wait any longer for change. The Assault Weapons Ban, a common-sense and evidence-based piece of gun safety legislation, was just reintroduced in the U.S. Senate. Take action now to help protect our nation’s children, families, and educators where they live, learn, and play, so that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential and thrive. Our children and youth are depending on us.
We know a federal Assault Weapons Ban works because it has before, and the majority of Americans continue to support common-sense gun safety measures such as limiting access to military-style weapons. Additionally, research demonstrates that gun laws restricting access to high-powered weapons capable of mass destruction in a short period reduce gun-related deaths. Now is the time to reinstate this popular and proven policy and save lives.
Take action today and urge your Senators to protect our students and families by passing critical safety legislation like the Assault Weapons Ban of 2023 (S. 25) and the Background Check Expansion Act (S. 494).

🦯 Today is White Cane Awareness Day!
Each year on October 15, we celebrate the independence, achievements, and contributions of the blind and visually impaired community. The white cane is more than just a tool—it’s a symbol of the confidence and freedom that allows blind individuals to navigate the world safely and independently.
White Cane Awareness Day reminds us that blind and visually impaired people live full, independent lives while giving back to their communities. It’s also a day to educate others about the importance of yielding to people using white canes and respecting their autonomy.
🔹 What can you do? When you see someone using a white cane, remember they are navigating with confidence. If help is needed, they will ask—no need to steer or shout warnings. And if you're driving, remember to stop and give them the right of way.
Let’s honor the abilities and successes of the blind community today and every day! 🎥 Check out this powerful video from the National Federation of the Blind to learn more: https://lnkd.in/ewR6qpbz#WhiteCaneAwarenessDay#EqualAccess#SupportBlindCommunity#WhiteCaneSafety
THE FAWN is a PSA from UNITED SENSE OF AMERICA. The film graphically underscores that assault weapons, designed for war, are unnecessary for sports hunting and should not be in schools.
"The film, painful and unavoidable, forces the viewer to imagine someone else’s finger on the trigger and something else as its target. While the scene itself is graphic, the messaging is a matter of fact. There simply is no defensible reason or excuse for assault weapons being necessary for sports hunting in our society.
Weapons of war are designed for a battlefield, not our children’s schools."

Hello, LinkedIn community!
I am reaching out for insights and guidance as I explore the possibility of implementing a comfort dog program within my department. Having witnessed the positive impact of therapy dogs following a critical incident back in 2022, I am eager to explore how I can integrate one into my department to support the well-being of officers and could greatly assist in the day to day operations.
Comfort dogs have become more valuable resources to provide significant emotional support and stress relief for law enforcement professionals, and individuals, groups and communities impacted by violence, tragedy, or traumatic event . I am interested in hearing from individuals who have experience with or knowledge about implementing such programs.
I am particularly interested in:
1. Examples of successful comfort dog programs in law enforcement or similar professional settings, along with their impact on personnel and community.
2. Insights from professionals experienced in animal-assisted therapy and the best practices for implementing such programs.
3. Strategies for gaining support from departmental leadership and addressing any potential concerns or considerations.
If you have any knowledge, experiences, or resources to share, I would greatly appreciate your input. Please feel free to comment below or connect with me directly to start a conversation.
Your support and insights are invaluable as we work to enhance the Department’s community policing efforts.
Be Safe ,
Matt

I haven’t read an article in a long time that outlines the exact reason why we do the work that we do. When you see us gathered at a conference, when you see us talking about threat assessment, or preventing the next act of targeted violence, when we are standing on top of soapbox after soapbox after soapbox and then jumping back into the work …. This is why. To prevent the misery of the person who did this, to save the lives of those who would become victims, and to prevent the pain and tragedy faced by all the survivors. As I say all the time when we are up late and working, “We are not accountants. This can’t wait till tomorrow.” And it cannot wait for us to do more, in every one of our communities in every aspect and every level. Care, connect, fight for safety, be there for support, learn, and do your job with people in mind. Warning, this article is raw and real and documents the last moments of a truly good human. https://lnkd.in/g9Bae37F

What a powerful conversation this was to hear today from 3 highly esteemed animal campaigners and spreading the word about Helping Rhinos.
Key take aways:
1. Changing a belief system that is 10’s of thousands of years is not going to happen overnight. But if a talk like today happens and even one person talks to another about it and that person tells someone….then eventually, 10 people will know about it.
2. We need to start using language that references animal rights more than animal welfare.
3. These are hard to hear conversations but must happen if change will even be contemplated. There are true heros out there who bear witness to, advocate for, change policies and legislation to not only save vulnerable animals but the lives of humans and the whole ecosystem - from worms and bugs in the soil to leaves at the top of a forest canopy and everything in between.
Thank you Dr Marc Abraham OBE for facilitating this conversation 💚

Child First is an amazing tool to support organisations to embedd a culture that understands, recognises and responds to trauma. We have to deliver this through the principles of being trauma informed and put on our rauma informed glasses.... #wytraumainformed2030
