There is a huge gap between education surrounding childhood trauma and adversity and the mental health of our youth. This is a system issue. It’s broken. We need to understand the history behind ACE’s, trauma, adversity and the connection with neurobiology. There is a reason these statistics are here. Why? What happened to those students? Let’s start asking questions about their wellbeing and collectively build an education strong in social justice but one founded on research and truth.
The school-to-prison pipeline and mass incarceration are both real issues in our country. As a generation, we have a responsibility to address this concern for the next generation. What actions can we take as a society to prevent our children from perpetuating this cycle of incarceration? For, those of you who serve everyday in whatever capacity to eradicate this horrible social issue. Thank you for your service...

As a lawyer, it can be easy to start believing that legal advocacy is the most important tool for creating change. But organized and activated communities are the true driver of continued and sustainable change. Raj Jayadev at Silicon Valley Debug brought the principles of community organizing into courthouses and created the participatory defense model. Not only did he win a MacArthur 'genius' award for it, he has now written a book, Protect Your People: How Ordinary Families Are Using Participatory Defense to Challenge Mass Incarceration. This is a great way to learn more about the power of participatory defense. https://lnkd.in/gmVk39TM

Business Coach; Attorney; Speaker; Author of "The Easy Way to Learn Your Rights" book series; D.A.M.M. Advocate Trainer
On this here Black History Month 2024, I think it's time we have a serious discussion. When it comes to harmful systems, people from the D.A.M.M. (Disproportionately Affected, Marginalized minority)community take the hardest and most consistent blows. It is time for all D.A.M.M. professionals and allies to fight for their communities by using their business missions, skills and strengths.💪🏾 I am a 10+ year skilled trial lawyer. I have packaged my skills and expertise to proactively protect the most vulnerable among us. The perceived "criminal". 👉🏽The problem is that term is code word for the N word and is used to discriminate LEGALLY against mainly Black Americans.👈🏽 For the next few weeks, I will reinstate my 2 minute Rights lessons for parents to help have this critical talk with their children. ✅️ The political climate is one of violence and hate, and we must prepare our most precious assets (our children and loved ones) for the worst parts of it. Turn this on when your child is near and let them listen and then ask them questions to ensure their understanding. 👉🏽(I added the last minute specifically for the D.A.M.M. parent.)
Now introducing our 2 Minute Rights Talks! We will release one weekly to help you navigate these very critical conversations with your kids and loved ones! (Especially given this “tough on crime” political climate) The kids in the video were age 6 and 11. Little known fact: This very recording was the catalyst for our Easy to Learn Your Rights book!🔥 Our Founder and CEO @thecourtneyteasley decided to share her legal expertise and trainings that she gives to her children with the world in an effort to proactively end Mass Incarceration! Play this reel for your kids and then grab a copy of The Easy Way to Learn Your Rights from #linkinbio #fortheculture #classisinsession #educate #educatethecommunity #DAMMcommunity #Proactive #criminaljustice #educator #disproportionatelyaffected #marginalizedminority

Ashtian Barnes should be alive today! TCRP and Wheeler Trigg O’Donnell (@wtotrial) have filed a friend of the court brief in Barnes v. Felix case, asking the United States Supreme Court to end the Fifth Circuit’s harmful "moment-of-threat" doctrine that Officer Felix used to justify Ashtian's death. Last year, TCRP released its Safe Passage: Traffic Safety & Civil Rights report, highlighting how minor traffic stops lead to senseless violence, family separations, wealth extraction, and incarceration. Today, that Report was featured in our brief to the United States Supreme Court asking for justice for Black and Brown drivers across Texas. No one should fear for their life simply due to a traffic stop. This case is crucial for the safety and civil rights of Black and Brown communities who are unfairly targeted by police. Read the full report here and follow TCRP for more updates about this important case. https://lnkd.in/g-vd8Gdf

🎉 Celebrating one year of making meaningful change with the Marion County Reentry Coalition’s Interdisciplinary Defense System (IDS)! 🌟 IDS is modeled after the “holistic defense” systems that emerged in the 1990s. In contrast to the traditional public defense model which prioritizes criminal representation by an individual lawyer, the holistic defense model is rooted in the idea that defenders must not only address the immediate criminal case but also the collateral contributors to recidivism and consequences of criminal justice involvement to produce long-term positive outcomes for their clients. IDS provides comprehensive legal representation along with access to health/mental health services, community support, housing assistance, and peer coaching. It offers a range of services from incarceration through post-release and community reintegration, aiming to break the cycle of reincarceration.
