The annual “Doctors In Recital” brought so many talented physicians into one magical event all to support unity, beautiful music and pediatric medicine in Houston. It was an honor to see Dr. Akira Nishikawa and many others in their musical element.
A special thank you to the Museo for hosting this wonderful evening. This beautifully designed space was made for moments like these. And to @steinwayhouston for bringing everyone together.

Should Surgeons Be Vocal Advocates?
ABSOLUTELY!
Surgeons are not just LEADERS in the operating room, but also have a critical role to play in ADVOCATING for BOTH their PATIENTS and THEMSELVES.
CHAMPIONING CHANGE: SURGICAL ADVOCACY IN ACTION
Surgical advocacy tackles a wide range of important issues.
Let's highlight three Key areas:
Supporting Women in Surgery:
1.Maternity leave policies and access to lactation rooms in workplaces are crucial for ensuring breastfeeding surgeons can continue to provide exceptional care while balancing the demands of motherhood.
2.Resident Well-being: Excessive work hours can lead to burnout and impact patient safety. Advocating for reasonable work schedules for residents in training is essential for their well-being and future success.
3.Mental wellness for Surgeons: At the forefront of every surgery is a Mere Mortal, A Surgeon and his (her) operating team members. These people need to be taken care of at most times.
They need psychosocial support in the decisions they have to make and the journeys they face with their patients.
By speaking up and advocating for positive change, surgeons can create a more conducive environment for everyone involved in surgical care.
WHAT ONE STEP WILL YOU TAKE?
Surgical advocacy starts with YOU.
Here are some ways to get involved:

Chief Executive Officer at University of Pennsylvania Health System
Dedicating a lifetime to research, Edward S. Cooper, M.D., helped the medical field identify and understand how racial differences affect stroke in Black individuals and other understudied populations in health care. The findings mobilized both public health and individual provider responses to these challenges. Dr. Cooper served more than 40 years as a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania and 25 years as a committed trustee at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Recently, at the age of 97, he announced plans to step down from that role. Dr. Cooper’s impact endures, and we look to his example as Penn Medicine works to strengthen health equity.
When asked "How can we bridge this gap to foster empathy and understanding?" Ryan Bailer a UofL School of Medicine Residency Programs partner said "I think one of the best ways to foster empathy and understanding is just to meet people and interact with them because if you never have a conversation then it's really difficult to build empathy or realize how lucky you are compared to others."
What do you think we can do to bridge the gap to foster empathy and understanding?
