The International Elephant Foundation (IEF) has helped establish Elephant Response Units (ERUs) around Way Kambas National Park on the island of Sumatra where they patrol the Park, find and remove snares, catch poachers, stop illegal harvesting, and importantly, herd wild elephants away from the park boundaries and away from human settlements. As a result of these efforts, locals have developed a level of pride and ownership in the ERUs, working together to protect some of the last remaining habitat for Sumatran elephants. We are proud to support IEF and encourage you to learn more: elephantconservation.org/ #AsianElephantAwarenessMonth 📸: International Elephant Foundation

Today is #WorldWetlandsDay! In #Zimbabwe, wetlands cover approximately 3% of the land but only 21% of these are stable. With support from the @USAID Resilient Waters Program implemented by @Chemonics, the Matobo Hills Consortium, led by the Dambari Wildlife Trust, is implementing a project called “Towards Resilience in the Matobo Hills.” The Matobo Hills are one of five high-altitude catchment areas in the Limpopo River Basin, responsible for generating most of the water in the Limpopo River basin. This project is helping communities conserve and rehabilitate their environment. Learn more: https://ow.ly/TM4B30szHoM

Today, we celebrate these magnificent creatures and the power of collaborative dedication to #elephantconservation! Based on the analysis published in 2022, elephant populations at MIKE sites across Africa and Asia are experiencing reduced poaching pressure—some of the lowest levels we've seen in years. Since 2002, the CITES-MIKE Programme has measured the Proportion of Illegally Killed Elephants (PIKE), which is the number of illegally killed elephants found divided by the total number of elephant carcasses encountered, aggregated by MIKE site and year. The news on reduced poaching pressure is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved, from rangers and local communities to international conservation bodies. The MIKE team is currently undertaking the analysis of the 2023 data, which will soon provide insights into whether or not the downward poaching trend continues. #CITESMIKE #DataForElephants #ElephantMonitoring #DataDrivenConservation European Union

It's Endangered Species Day, and today's spotlight is on elephants. Ever imagined how would you tackle a 6-ton elephant heading for your farm? Elephants from the Ngorongoro highlands forest have been spilling over to Kitete Village in Tanzania with their giant footsteps weaving through farms to reach nutritious crops. After careful elephant tracking, an effective placement for beehive fences is done that prevents crop-raiding and conflict with elephants, while maintaining essential connectivity routes and corridors. Wild Survivors along with the local communities are working on practical and passive elephant-deterrent farm methods. They're training farmers on: 🐝 Beehive fences 🌶️ Chilli fences 🤧 Smelly Ellie repellent 🧱 Chilli bricks Read more about how the beekeeping adventure has ticked so many boxes, including earning a direct benefit from honey, wax, and pollination services: https://lnkd.in/dPbd3pm9 #ThisisRestor Crowther Lab | ETH Zurich |

While it's an honor to be listed alongside the phenomenal startups below, what's even better is the proof that biodiversity loss, one of the world's biggest challenges, is now also a business challenge. Which means we have a good chance of solving it. As John Elkington says, "Business is now waking up to the fact that it does not exist in isolation from the society and environment in which it operates." We're looking forward to seeing these startups scale and support businesses across the globe in making the necessary changes for a world we all want to live in. 🌿 AdAstra Sustainability 💧 Riverkin 🔍 Dunya Analytics 🐠 rrreefs 🌊 Inverto Earth 🦗 SPAIA 🌳 DNAir 🍃 Amfora #Biodiversity #Sustainability #Innovation #Startups #EndangeredSpeciesDay #MassChallengeSwitzerland #SharedValue

Last week on Amakhala Game Reserve, we welcomed a tiny new elephant calf to the reserve. It's moments like these that remind us how incredible Mother Nature is. After the devastating loss of around 1/3 of Africa's savannah elephant population between 2007-2014, it's heartening to see the positive impact of conservation efforts reflected in recent statistics. According to the 2024 report from the UNODC, the international ivory market is shrinking as prices collapse and elephant poaching decreases. By 2020, prices dropped to new lows on the continent, with raw ivory going for as low as $92/kg on the black market. This drastic decline in price indicates a genuine decline in demand, highlighting the effectiveness of conservation initiatives. Our wish is that, over the lifetime of this little elephant calf, positive changes continue to occur for this majestic species. Roam free and safe, little one! 🐘🐘🐘 Find out more about our conservation efforts on the Amakhala website. 📹: WildEarth #LionRoarsHotelsAndLodges #AmakhalaGameReserve #Conservation #Wildlife #BigFive

Pictured here is head keeper, Zacharia Mutai, with one of the two last remaining northern white rhinos at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Poaching and habitat loss has caused the rhino population to dwindle from 500,000 roaming Africa and Asia at the beginning of the 20th Century, to less that 30,000 today. This persistent poaching means very few rhinos survive outside national parks and reserves. With multiple rhino species in danger of extinction. On #WorldRhinoDay, we dream of a future where there is no poaching and habitat loss, and the rhinos can thrive in the wild once again. ♥️😢
