#𝐟𝐑𝐈𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 - In this study, we looked at how wildlife interacts with linear features with different characteristics. Here’s a short summary of what we found: 🐾 Moose, elk, deer, and bears were more likely to use linear features with human and game trails. 🌲 Bears steered clear of linear features with denser vegetation; wolves avoided those with taller veg. 🦌 Moose, elk, and deer were drawn to linear features with more forage species. The limpkin is typically a #bird of southern swamps. They feed primarily on large snails, which is what this bird was doing when I photographed it in a reserve east of Tampa. They are a rather large species, standing two feet tall with a wingspan of 40 inches. Limpkins were essentially struggling for survival in many places due to habitat destruction. But #nature often finds a way around even the most inconvenient circumstances. This year there were limpkin sightings all over the #Chicago area. In fact, there are still limpkins hanging around in December! Which is not the greatest situation for these individuals. It's hard to feed on snails when they're frozen under the ice. Irruptive migration events like these are what drives #evolution. The limpkins in this year's irruption are feeding on invasive snail species now spreading across the continent. #climatechange is also a possible contributing factor to changes such as these. The Chicago Tribune reports: "While Illinois does have the invasive Chinese mystery snail, often considered an apple snail, it also has 75 more mussels, snail and clam species the limpkins can eat."

The New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat/pekepeka is just one of a kind! There's no other bat like it. Foraging on the ground for worms and weta, these awesome bats are strong climbers and adept to clambering about dense forest habitats. This male, captured as part of our on-going research into acoustic lures, shows the strength of this bat and the ability to 'hop' into the air with ease. Rare and restricted to pockets native bush, these bats are threatened by introduced predators such as rats and mustelids. The success of our Lure systems in increasing the capture rates of NZ's bat species means more resources can be directed to finding, via radio tracking, and protecting their tree roosts. https://lnkd.in/gEkg75ue
