🎥 Fascinating video: Wild horses come back to the Danube Delta 🐎 🐎 Wild horses from Latvian reserves settled in the #DanubeDelta in 2019-2020 to enhance natural grazing as part of #rewilding efforts, supported by the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme. While grazing, rolling, and digging, they create meadows that attract birds, insects, amphibians, and other animals. They also provide space for a variety of plants to grow and help control excessive vegetation, reducing the risk of fires. Horse dung attracts specific fungi and dung beetle species, and digested seeds germinate within it. 🍄 🦋 🌱 Horses strip vegetation close to the ground, so when combined with water buffalo, the impact of natural grazing is even greater. Like their ancestor, the extinct Tarpan, wild horses are robust, can survive harsh winters, and defend themselves against predators. 🎞 Oleksandr Kurakin / Rewilding Europe #WildHorses #WildlifeComeback #NaturalProcesses

The New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat/pekepeka is just one of a kind! There's no other bat like it. Foraging on the ground for worms and weta, these awesome bats are strong climbers and adept to clambering about dense forest habitats. This male, captured as part of our on-going research into acoustic lures, shows the strength of this bat and the ability to 'hop' into the air with ease. Rare and restricted to pockets native bush, these bats are threatened by introduced predators such as rats and mustelids. The success of our Lure systems in increasing the capture rates of NZ's bat species means more resources can be directed to finding, via radio tracking, and protecting their tree roosts. https://lnkd.in/gEkg75ue

"I receive more and more calls each year from landowners inquiring about their seedlings having a “funny” look or appearing to look like “little bushes.” Inevitably, after investigating the claims, I find that one of two culprits is at work. I have already discussed one of the primary villains, the Nantucket Pine Tip Moth, in a TreeLines article a while back. Now let’s talk about the other one. DEER! Officially Whitetail Deer." The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a native to America. It does not belong to Finnish nature. It is an alien species that causes significant destruction in gardens, crops and nature. It also causes a lot of accidents in road traffic. For some years now, Finnish hunters have tried to reduce the number of white-tailed deer especially in densely populated areas. Still, in many places the deer population is far too dense. The Finnish southwestern archipelago is a good example of this. The ecosystems in this archipelago are particularly sensitive to alien species. For instance, the natural meadows are in great danger when deer graze on them. Although the white-tailed deer is a valuable game animal, the stock should be drastically cut down in the archipelago to reduce the considerable damage it causes.
