It wasn’t unusual to get a call from a Kmart Store Manager, Sam Walton just walked through my store. Sam was always studying the competition and his little notebook. 🛩️ During the 80’s I was operating Kmarts in Miami. It was our “heydays”, we were “Kings of Discount”. Today, I was able to speak with a group of students within the University of South Carolina College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to give back to a college that has supported so much of my career. Professors who truly care about the wellbeing of every student and their contribution to their field. The focus today was once again on networking and the impact of a Global Supply Chain. As once a student in the college, the importance of networking was not only highlighted but put into action by many networking events with industry leaders and alum. A practice that at its core is about relationships. Businesses don’t just increase profit margin by being robots, they are able to increase sales and margins from the building of relationships. From a supply chain/ purchasing perspective, networking is part of the negotiation process. Understanding the culture of a company that you are going to partner with and having a relationship with them that one can trust and build. As a graduate of the University and an alumni board member for HRSM it reiterates the importance of these conversations. Whether you work in a restaurant or work in a manufacturing facility, the foundation of the business improving is based on the relationships internally and externally. I've been back from maternity leave for 2 months and here is the one thing that stands out as I walk my mall. Very few retailers are having FUN with their customers. Sometimes we lose sight of what our roles are as retail leadership, there are SO many distractions, but the reality is that our most IMPORTANT role is creating customer loyalty and teaching our teams how to do the same. When people receive great or terrible customer service, they tell EVERYONE they know. So how do we change our mindset, our team's mindset around our ever-growing to-do list? How do we get consistent exceptional service at the top of the that list?

Getting your product to your consumer! Day 3 Hosted by Marks and Spencer at their Marble Arch store - things got very real! Kicking us off was Lauren Mallon bringing real energy and honesty in sharing her career journey - important theme being just how far attitude takes you in unlocking breadth & experiences. Hantian Wang brilliantly brought to life the magic of range & spacing - how to stand out and insight into what your customers (Buyer) are prioritising. Our teams were joined by some outstanding graduates Niamh Timpson Hannah Connolly Gregor Munro Millie Stewart who took our teams to stake out different channels (Stores, Restaurants, Pubs etc.). Prompted some excellent thinking around the right channels for the right brands. This is part of the magic of the industry: it's so very relatable and the deeper you dive, the more interesting it becomes. Our delegates felt the same - teams were getting strategic about who was staying/who was going: there's some tension brewing with laptops being slammed shut as soon as anyone who isn't in your team approaches! A huge thank you to the team Marks and Spencer for a brilliant and thoughtful experience - particularly Becky Cock who took the reins mid-way through and delivered such a cracking day.
