Due to federal protections being restored by a federal judge in February 2022, Minnesota wolves cannot currently be hunted. However, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources intends to hold a wolf hunt once our state’s wolves lose those protections. A recent peer reviewed paper showed that wolves continued to be killed illegally long after the legal wolf hunts ended. In other words, wolf hunts simply cannot be controlled. Right now, wolves in our region are under attack in Congress. We need to let our lawmakers know that federal protections need to be strengthened, not eliminated. Take action at https://lnkd.in/gZ89hhrG and raise your voice to #BanWolfHunting.

Please help spread this post. Wolves are capable of transforming entire ecosystems for the better.
BREAKING: This week the U.S. House of Representatives just passed a bill that will take away federal protection for gray wolves across most of the lower 48. Without the protection of the Endangered Species Act, the wolf slaughter we're seeing in the northern Rockies will spread. The last time wolves lost federal protection, they were hunted down in places like Wisconsin with devastating results: More than 200 were killed in just 72 hours. We can't return to those days. We'll do all we can to protect them and to stop this anti-wolf attack. These fights are long, and we need you with us. Help support our work ➡️ https://biodiv.us/3y0G8qp

In a demonstration that America’s outdoors and recreational shooting sports pastimes still bring people together, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 615 in a bipartisan vote, sending the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act over to the U.S. Senate for consideration. The bill is strongly supported by NSSF and would require the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture to provide site-specific peer-reviewed scientific data that demonstrates traditional lead ammunition or fishing tackle is causing detrimental wildlife population impacts before prohibiting their use on federal lands. U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) spoke out against H.R. 615 in a House Rules Committee hearing prior to the legislation’s passage. During her testimony, the progressive firebrand recited a false statement that is demonstrably proven untrue by any examination of the data available about traditional lead ammunition. With nature breaking down around us we are ramping up our war on wildlife While everyone knows about climate change (even if incredibly still not everyone believes IN it), the impact of biodiversity loss is much less covered and understood. And it is greatly underestimated, but the loss of nature is happening all round us and affecting our health and the ecosystem services we take for granted including food security, flood mitigation and disease control. In "Science takes a back seat in the war on wolves" Tracy Keeling paints a compelling yet depressing picture of the plight of European and Swiss wolves. Her website (https://lnkd.in/eRrgfjkw) sends an equally stark message: 4% of all Earth's mammalian biomass consists of wild animals 62% of all Earth's mammalian biomass consists of farmed animals And while we humans make up just 0.01% of life on Earth, she points out that our species is responsible for crossing 6 of the 9 identified planetary boundaries, "including massively breaching the safe limit of biosphere integrity, aka biodiversity loss." According to a letter penned today by over 1,000 scientists (https://lnkd.in/eczfyhsM): "There are more than 163,000 species on the IUCN Red List, with more than 45,300 species threatened with extinction, including 41% of amphibians, 26% of mammals and 12% of birds." They go on to say that: "The climate and nature crises are not happening in isolation—they are deeply connected. Changes in climate are negatively impacting biodiversity, while the loss of nature is amplifying the breakdown of our climate, making us less able to adapt to it. We believe that to achieve the turn-around required, systemic change can only come quickly enough if it is delivered through legal reforms that integrate our response to the interconnected climate and nature emergencies." Against this backdrop, Switzerland has modified its legislation to make it easier to hunt iconic, native and "protected" species and a number of other European countries are following suit or about to do so. We are the ones that deserve to be shot. PS. Now please don't take the above statement literally and simply treat it as a turn of phrase, for everyone (except for our targeted wildlife) knows that the pen is mightier than the sword.
My latest, on the war on wolves: Switzerland fired the official starting gun on a five-month-long wolf cull on 1 September. Several cantons have applied to kill young wolves and their elders, as well as to wipe out numerous whole packs. If approved by the federal authorities, the cantons will be able to commence with the slaughter, thanks to controversial legislative changes that allow for a dramatic reduction of the country’s fragile wolf population. Switzerland’s actions are illustrative of a wider trend. Previously hunted to near extinction in Europe, wolf populations have rebounded in recent decades. But as wolf numbers have crept up, the same demonisation and persecution that has plagued the species for eternity has crept back in. However, there are now obstacles to killing the maligned canine, not least the legal protections that have helped to pull wolves back from the brink. So the current war on wolves is being fought on many fronts, with science, democracy, and the iconic canines, all getting hammered in the process. https://lnkd.in/ezEiwrSt

Estes Park, Colorado, is on high alert as a wave of unexpected elk attacks has officials scrambling to issue urgent warnings. In the past two weeks alone, there have been three alarming incidents where elk have aggressively targeted people, including children riding bikes and playing in parks. This unusual behavior has park officials puzzled and concerned, as elk cows are known to defend their young during calving season, but this level of unprovoked aggression is unprecedented. NSSF praises the U.S. House of Representatives’ bipartisan passage of H.R. 6492, the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act. The bill, introduced by U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.), garnered 51 bipartisan cosponsors. The measure was approved in a voice vote, a rare demonstration of Congress working across party lines. The NSSF-supported bill includes the Range Access Act, which would increase and improve outdoor recreation opportunities across the nation while improving infrastructure and driving economic growth in rural communities. Specifically, that portion of the bill would require the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to have at least one qualifying recreational shooting range in each National Forest and BLM district which is crucial to ensuring safe public recreational shooting. The EXPLORE Act also contains other provisions to improve hunting and recreational shooting access. The EXPLORE Act must be approved by the U.S. Senate before it can be considered by President Joe Biden. https://lnkd.in/gTHE-n4Q #EXPLOREAct #RangeAccess #rangebill #NSSF

🌟 Think you’ve got what it takes to pass Trivia Time? Test your knowledge of Ohio law. 🐟🎣🐋 Attention all Ohio fishermen! In Ohio, it is illegal to fish for whaled on Wednesday. True or False? Let us know your guess! 👀 #TriviaTime #OhioLaws #WhaleyGoodTrivia 🐟🎣🐋 ## Ahhhh, you landlubbers, this was a trick question. It is not illegal to fish for whales on Wednesday. It is illegal to fish for them on Sundays. However, we have a bigger question… if you are fishing for whales in Ohio, perhaps this isn’t your biggest concern. The Ohio whale population is nonexistent. 🐟🎣🐋

Eagles in the U.S. are in danger from #lead poisoning, with many of these powerful birds repeatedly exposed to deadly lead fragments left behind by hunters. Recent incidents, where eagles tragically died after ingesting lead, highlight the severity of the issue. These majestic creatures, often seen as symbols of strength, are falling victim to something as small as a grain of rice. By making the switch to non-lead ammunition, we could help protect eagles and ensure they continue to soar across our skies. #LeadPoisoning #WildlifeProtection #EcoFriendlyHunting https://lnkd.in/enfE9b7G

In the past three days, wildfires across Colusa, Lake, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, and Yolo counties have burnt over 11,000 acres, more than the total acreage burned in the previous three years combined in these areas. Coverage for these wildfires still under 40 percent. These include the #PointFire and the #SitesFire, which has heavily affected the surrounding area. #WildfireAlert
