China has been adding a record amount of renewable energy generation capacity. So this is not surprising. It remains to be seen if coal power generation peaks this year or the next. Either way, we are very close to seeing a peak in global coal consumption.

China's approvals for new coal-fired power plants dropped sharply in the first half of this year, according to our review of project documents showing that 14 new coal plants were approved from January to June with a total capacity of 10.3 gigawatts, writes The Associated Press “We may now be seeing a turning point,” said Greenpeace East Asia Beijing-based project lead Grace Yuhe Gao M.P.A..
