China's approvals for new coal-fired power plants dropped sharply in the first half of this year, according to our review of project documents showing that 14 new coal plants were approved from January to June with a total capacity of 10.3 gigawatts, writes The Associated Press “We may now be seeing a turning point,” said Greenpeace East Asia Beijing-based project lead Grace Yuhe Gao M.P.A.. I didnt have time last year to look at the Climate Change Committee report on the Dunkelflaute last year so sorry this is a bit late There is no XL that goes with it which is a shame, but the 4 big points in the report are these: 1. UK will need significant hydrogen storage capacity, the CCC says. This could reach 2.8 terawatt hours (TWh) of storage in salt caverns by 2030 and up to 5.2TWh by 2035. Duncan Yellen, how easy is that? 2. Central scenario also sees 3,800km of pipeline being required to transport hydrogen around by 2035. The largest deployment would connect the north of England and Scotland with the extensive salt caverns of the Midlands National Gas need to be cracking on building that 3. Back-up generation capacities required in 2035 based on “low wind year” like 2010 include 25 GW of unabated gas capacity. 4. 20 GW of H2 fueled elec gen plant or gas/CCS So the war on unabated gas is over, it obviously lacked any understanding of energy (National Infrastructure Commission also supported unabated gas in their recent report) 10,000 MW of unabated gas back-up (inc the chp) is already supplied gas using the gas distribution system, much of it 2 bar (and obviously that gas goes through the NTS)

It's time for countries to start putting flesh on the bones of the promises they make in the political declarations from COP climate summits (i.e. cover decisions or pacts or consensuses, or whatever they might be called). If you agreed to phase down unabated coal (as you did in 2021), then show how you're going to do it in your next NDC (due by early next year). No time like the present, given that it's now a few years since the pledge was made...

Romania’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan Published by the EC Upon Romania’s request, the European Commission has published Romania’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (INECP) 2025-2030. The #INECP includes 89 additional policies and measures aimed at increasing the share of #renewableenergy sources (RES), significantly reducing greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions and implementing innovative solutions across all economic sectors.

Is the draft Integrated Resource Plan 2023 a win for climate change mitigation efforts? The answer is somewhat yes, assuming that the Other Distributed energy would be mainly generated from renewables. This assertion is about Horizone One (2025-2030) installed capacity since the information on Horizone Two (H2) is sketchy. The graph below shows a reduction in coal and a slight increase in gas. The reduction in hydro is consistent with the diminishing and variable rainfall patterns due to climate change. The introduction of the battery storage system would improve the use and efficiency of solar and wind resulting in less CO2 emissions from coal and gas. IRP 2023 is an improvement from IRP 2019 concerning climate change mitigation. In other words, IRP 2023 H1 will generate less greenhouse gas emissions. Global Energy Monitor (GEM), a San Francisco, California-based non-governmental organization, in its latest Global Coal Plant Tracker (GCPT) said China and India alone account for 86% of that total. An article posted September 3 on the Carbon Brief website, written by the GCPT research team at GEM, provided context for the report, and said the number of countries with coal-fired power in either pre-construction or construction phases has dropped to 40 this year, down from 75 countries developing projects in 2014. Carbon Brief is a UK-based website that specializes “in the science and policy of climate change.” #powergeneration
