This May, we honor and celebrate the incredible dedication, compassion, and resilience of nurses everywhere. ICYMI: WeRPN CEO, Dianne Martin, joined Jeff Samut on #SiriusXMCanada Now to discuss the current state of #nursing in #Ontario: "We have four requests of the #government," said Dianne. "The first is to legislate manageable #workloads. We want #nurse-to-patient ratios to be legislated. We want to prioritize #retention with #growthopportunities. We want to establish professional #compensation. We’re looking for equalization across all sectors of what we pay #nurses. And finally, we want to guard against cost inefficiencies [e.g., private clinics and nursing agencies]. We want to see taxpayers’ dollars go toward getting the most and best care possible." [CLOSING THE NURSING GAP via ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SOLUTIONS] One of the largest contributing factors to the lack of #healthequity is a lack of services, which can put people at higher risk for poor health outcomes. An ongoing shortage of #nurses, in particular, has reached a critical point in the U.S. and especially in Southern states. Read how the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation partnered with #communities, #HBCUs, and other partners to develop innovative solutions--an effort that has helped to halve Louisiana's anticipated nursing gap by 2030. Just another Manic Monday? A study in the July issue of the AORN Journal looks at how busy operating rooms are on different days of the week. The research looks back at data to see if there were any differences in how much ORs are used each day. The study also explores why this might happen and how much it costs the hospital. • Mondays had the highest OR utilization rate (The overall average was 69.1% daily). • Mondays saved the day in terms of late starts---the fewest minutes lost were on Mondays. • Thursdays and Fridays tended to be the villains of efficiency. Takeaway: Perioperative leaders hold the compass to success. By monitoring OR utilization and identifying sources of variability, they can help chart the course towards consistency, slashing costs, and amplifying revenue. We want to know---are Mondays the busiest days at your facilities? How do you maximize OR utilization across the week? Tell us in the comments below. 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/gGb__zfG Become a member to receive the monthly publication in your mailbox and email. #ORNurse #AORNJournal #Nursing #Nurses #NurseLeaders #Nurse

🔴 Tunnel Vision 🔴 We talk about tunnel vision in medicine all the time. It is why two brains are better than one. If I have been sitting in the same OR for hours, I could miss something. If I hear the same alarms going off in the ICU, I could miss something. If I attempt the same airway adjuncts over and over during a difficult airway, I could miss something. Remember to never attempt the same intervention over and over, try something different, call for an extra set of hands or eyes, stay vigilant because even a small change could save a life. #medicalmalpractice #medicalmalpracticeattorney #nursesonlinkedin #nurses #crna #legalnurseconsultant #legalnurse

It's time to change the future of #nursing. Over the past five years, nearly 100 #strikes have erupted in the US, and 2024 is on track to surpass the already alarming number of strikes in 2023 - 30 strikes that involved a staggering 123,436 nurses across 51 hospitals in 15 states. NurseTogether.com https://lnkd.in/guzJUZfE The current #nursingcrisis has reached a boiling point, with nurses across the nation resorting to strikes to make their voices heard. This is a clear indication that we need to start listening to nurses and addressing their concerns. We must take immediate action to create a more sustainable future for the nursing profession. Key areas for change include: 💰 Nursing reimbursement: A modernized #nursingreimbursement structure is essential to attract and retain talented nurses and end the cost-minimization work environment hospitals must embrace to survive. 📚 Investing in nursing education: We need to support aspiring #nurses and provide opportunities for continuing education and professional development. We must also invest in our nurse #educators and embrace new areas of innovation in #education. 💪 Empowering nurses: Nurses should be at the center of patient care and patient outcomes. Nurse-led care models have proven to be effective and should be encouraged and supported. We must recognize nurses' invaluable contributions and make the necessary changes to ensure a strong and vibrant #nursingworkforce for future generations. #NursingCrisis #NurseStrikes #SupportNurses #HealthcareReform #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareonlinked

Between 2020 and 2023, a significant number of nurses left the profession due to burnout, driven by the immense pressures brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent healthcare challenges. Here's a breakdown of the data for each year: - **2020**: During the first year of the pandemic, around 100,000 registered nurses (RNs) left the workforce due to stress, burnout, and retirements [oai_citation:5,NCSBN Research Projects Significant Nursing Workforce Shortages and Crisis | NCSBN](https://lnkd.in/dk-3ngn6). Many nurses felt overwhelmed by the sudden increase in patient loads and the lack of adequate protective measures. - **2021**: By 2021, the percentage of nurses considering leaving the profession grew to 29%, up from 11% in 2020 [oai_citation:4,Nursing Shortage Fact Sheet](https://lnkd.in/dKwFSxFA). This period saw many nurses opting out due to ongoing exhaustion, inadequate pay, and an inability to balance personal well-being with work demands. - **2022**: The trend worsened in 2022, with 52% of nurses reporting they were considering leaving their current positions, primarily due to burnout and insufficient staffing [oai_citation:3,Nursing Shortage Fact Sheet](https://lnkd.in/dKwFSxFA). This was one of the most challenging years for nurse retention, especially in acute care settings where 60% of nurses reported burnout [oai_citation:2,Nursing Shortage Fact Sheet](https://lnkd.in/dKwFSxFA). - **2023**: The latest figures indicate that more than a quarter of all nurses have plans to leave the profession by 2027, driven by feelings of being undervalued, unsafe working conditions, and unmanageable workloads [oai_citation:1,Overworked and Understaffed, More Than 1 in 4 US Nurses Say They Plan to Leave the Profession | Health Care Workforce | JAMA | JAMA Network](https://lnkd.in/dA7Yjg5X). The turnover rate remained high, with many healthcare systems struggling to retain staff amidst rising mental health challenges and persistent burnout. These trends are alarming, as the growing number of nurses leaving healthcare is exacerbating the workforce shortage and impacting patient care across the country.
