How do you quantify the West? An estimated 30 million bison inhabited North America in the 16th century; today, just 500,000 remain. Gone, too, are most of the wolves, California condors, wolverines, and pygmy rabbits. In our newest issue, Ruby McConnell explores 25 numbers that reveal the changing landscape of a region once thought limitless: https://lnkd.in/gittabph 🎨 by iStock.

We are facing a turning point for change in our watersheds. Connectivity, water quality, and industry pressures are pushing so many aquatic species to the brink. We are seeing these devastating trends with Atlantic salmon here in the Wolastoq watershed on the east coast of Canada. I often think about how much of an impact I can really have when I open upstream access to a single tributary, in a single river, in a single and small area of the country. Then I think of these small measures and actions being undertaken by so many organizations across the country. When added together, they create lasting and powerful change.
"If we don't do something now and conserve what little salmon we have left – one day there's not going to be any." Watch the full 'Homecoming: A Salmon Restoration Story' documentary short film and be inspired by the return of the salmon to BC's Upper Pitt watershed: https://lnkd.in/gNUq3jDW 🐟💙
