As a spend-down organization, one of our main priorities is ensuring that our grantees, partners and staff can thrive beyond the life of our organization, ensuring that the communities we collectively serve have a brighter tomorrow. It's a somewhat non-conventional approach to philanthropy that seems to be gaining popularity. Instead of hoarding wealth, we re-distribute it equitably to those who can benefit most. In moments of crisis, it is important for philanthropy to shift and support the strategic priorities of movement. Our previous blog, "Finding Purpose in Philanthropy" reminds of us this. In the blog, our Director of Programs & Movement Support, Shavaun Evans states, "I’m often seeking out opportunities to connect and learn from other values-aligned folk in the field. By values aligned, I mean people who are unlearning what traditional philanthropy teaches us (short-term, donor-dictated transactions) and shifting their practices towards ones that intentionally make space for grassroots voices to guide and lead their work."
