With EU decision-makers inching closer to a consensus on the EU Asylum & #MigrationPact, Save the Children remains extremely concerned about the decisions agreed on 18 December as co-legislators conclude the #MigrationEU reform. Federica Toscano, Save the Children Europe’s Senior Advocacy Advisor for Children on the Move, explains the implications. The #MigrationEU Pact needs to prioritise ❗ protection ❗ dignity ❗ human rights ❗ family reunification and ❗ successful integration of refugee and migrant children into European societies

🚨 Join the urgent call! Tomorrow, MEPs will decide on the #EUMigrationPact, a concerning continuation of policies jeopardizing refugee rights. 81 Civil Society Organisations warn of its dire implications, including de facto detention, racial profiling, and pushbacks. This Pact lacks humanity, reinforcing barriers instead of embracing solidarity. MEPs must reject it and uphold the values of dignity and compassion. Join us in calling on MEPs to vote NO in the upcoming LIBE committee vote. #RefugeesWelcome #VoteNoMigrationPact #StopThisPact Read the joint statement: https://bit.ly/49AjCSK

The South African Human Rights Commission recently hosted a crucial dialogue on Migration in South Africa. South Africa’s migration landscape is a complex mix of documented and undocumented migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons contributing to both the country’s socio-economic dynamism and challenges in social cohesion, human rights, and policy enforcement. It was an honor to join the dedicated Commissioner for Migration and esteemed colleagues from Xenowatch, Disabled Migrants Rights Networking Orgs, and IOM on a panel to discuss and develop collaborative strategies for addressing these challenges. The discussions underscored the importance of ensuring that human rights and dignity must be upheld for all—because human dignity knows no borders. #endstatelessness #humanrights #migrantrights #refugeerights #dignity #immigrationjustice

Tomorrow I am moderating a special panel, Migration Politics that Kill: How governments exacerbate human trafficking, at 12:00 pm EST. The event is free of cost and open to everyone. As global displacements rise due to conflict, persecution, and climate disasters, opportunities for safe, regular migration routes are closing. People on the move are being forced to take extreme risks in search of a better life, but with no protection or access to safe routes, some face being exploited, detained, and even killed. Disturbingly, we are witnessing a trend of governments hijacking “anti-trafficking” narratives to legitimize their anti-migration policies. Register for this event if you, like me, are deeply concerned about the growing hostility towards people on the move. https://lnkd.in/eS5BDFP4 You can read more about the panel and this issue here: https://lnkd.in/eBbpNB4x
Tomorrow, Wednesday July 3 at 12:00 ET join us for a very important panel discussion, "Migration Politics that Kill: How governments exacerbate human trafficking ." We are delighted to be joined by incredible panelists: - Mario Bruzzone, PhD Policy Advisor in the Women’s Refugee Commission’s Migrant Rights and Justice program - Francesca Humi, Expert and Writer on border and state violence, migrant domestic workers’ rights, U.K. modern slavery - Sophie Cartwright, Senior Policy Officer at the Jesuit Refugee Service U.K., Research Associate at the Border Criminologies University of Oxford We're questioning the use of “anti-trafficking” narratives to justify hostile anti-migration policies at a pivotal moment, just before elections in the U.K. and the U.S. with migration being the top issue on the docket. https://lnkd.in/dM6R_Xb9

New Working Paper on RESEARCHING INTERNAL DISPLACEMENT: "Enacting A Complex Social Masculinity: Internally-Displaced Filipino Men’s Response to Varied Personalities" - by Jennefer Bagaporo (Xavier U, Philippines) - https://lnkd.in/ggxrA2Gw This working paper explores masculinity in conflict-affected contexts in the Philippines, emphasizing the complexity of displaced men’s behaviours during displacement and post-siege. The findings challenge simplistic narratives that categorize men as either victims or perpetrators. Instead, the study emphasizes the complexity of men’s responses and underscores the need for gender-responsive approaches in displacement-related decision-making processes. #displacement #idps #philippines #asia #mindanao #masculinities #conflict #gender Researching Internal Displacement Refugee Law Initiative Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies, School of Advanced Study Steven Miron Jennefer Lyn L. Join PILnet and partners on 10 June (10am - 12pm) for a hybrid event bringing members of the legal community together to share knowledge and good practices on the theme of “Gender, Justice and the Law; Legal and Practical Challenges for Refugees.” - Around the world, gender inequality and sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) in various forms expose women, girls and LGBTQI+ people to a heightened risk or harm, ultimately forcing many to flee and seek protection. Upon displacement, these individuals often face further heightened risks of harm, including exploitation and trafficking, and can experience significant challenges in accessing asylum and protection systems. Sign up and learn more about how different legal actors are addressing these issues! - Find out more about the speakers and how to register to join this event - remotely or in person - here: https://lnkd.in/e34tA_cE Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, StARS Saint Andrew's Refugee Services, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), Kids in Need of Defense UK, Act for Peace, Global Strategic Litigation Council, Refugee Law Project, Faculty of Law, Makerere University, Refugee Legal, Cecilia Vejby Andersen, Kathrine Starup, Jyothi Kanics, Ben Lewis, Bella Mosselmans, Brian Barbour, Devota Nuwe, David Manne

When asylum seekers work, our communities don’t just grow—they flourish. But a required 180-day waiting period has asylum seekers waiting on the sidelines, unable to work for months. The Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act (H.R. 1325) reduces the wait time from 180 days to just 30. Nuestras comunidades están listas para recibir a los buscadores de asilo con las manos abiertas. It’s time to #LetAsylumSeekersWork. https://ow.ly/9eFi50QHSRM Refugee Congress T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP)
