As we approach the mid-point of the SDGs period, data show that the world is not on track to achieve key targets as per SDG 6 aiming to ‘ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’. What is more, the progress on drinking water, sanitation and hygiene is crucial to achieve SDG 5, which aims to ‘realize gender equality and empower all women and girls’. Likewise, gender inequalities impede realization of the SDG 6 targets on WASH, which points out how the two goals are tightly connected to one another and require coordinated actions to be fully achieved. #WASH #water #gender #SDG5 #SDG6 #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/eCe3ztra

The Arab region is home to around 45 million persons with disabilities, a number that has increased due to instability and conflict. They face significant economic challenges, social exclusion, and greater vulnerability to violence, inadequate healthcare, and natural disasters. Disability and poverty are closely linked, with most disabled persons living in rural areas lacking services and employment, perpetuating poverty. A brief by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) examines the disability-poverty link and offers policy recommendations to address these challenges and implement effective programs. #inclusivity #disability #middleeast #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dYDtbmSz

The "Checklist for Safe and Inclusive Consultations with Children" by the Education Cluster in collaboration with Unicef serves as an essential guide for cluster coordinators and partners who are responsible for organizing consultations with children, such as Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) or Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). The focus is on ensuring that these consultations are safe, inclusive, and responsive to gender, age, and disability considerations. The checklist included in this guide is designed to be a practical tool, applicable at any stage of the Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC) process. It outlines key actions that can be used as entry points for facilitating meaningful and contextually appropriate consultations. #Eie #education #SDG4 #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dXcDSe58

What does meaningful support to bolster food security look like in countries affected by conflict and protracted crises? Developed for the UK's Global Food Security Summit held in late 2023, this policy brief aims at answering this question based on the of a research conducted by the Supporting Pastoralism and Agriculture in Recurrent and Protracted Crises (SPARC): 1. Focus on Domestic Issues: Domestic factors are more crucial than international ones for food security in crisis-prone countries. Prioritize local food production over concerns about global commodity prices and conflicts. 2. Tailored Approaches: No single solution fits all. Each country's food security strategy should be customized to its unique circumstances. 3. Local Resilience: In protracted crises, communities often rely on their own coping mechanisms rather than external aid. Strengthening local economies and infrastructures is essential. 4. Rethink Anticipatory Action: Anticipatory funding may not significantly prevent or mitigate prolonged food crises. Effective crisis management requires combining short-term relief with long-term development, though this integration is currently lacking in practice. The growing need for humanitarian protection is driven by new crises, prolonged displacement, and expanding norms of who deserves protection. Additionally, factors like demographic changes, economic inequality, and climate change contribute to high levels of mixed migration, straining border and asylum systems. The report “The End of Asylum? Evolving the Protection System to Meet 21st Century Challenges“, which concludes the Beyond Territorial Asylum initiative by MPI and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, envisions the future of international protection with a focus on asylum. It discusses promising developments and best practices for orderly entry, system efficiency, and regional capacity building to enhance protection for those in need and secure public trust by reducing border chaos and easing pressure on migration management systems. #asylum #refugees #displacement #protection #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dsjAysVa

The Aid Transparency Index, independently researched and written by Publish What You Fund, has tracked the transparency of the largest international aid organizations over the past 12 years. The 2024 results are now out! The average score across all organizations in 2024 was the highest recorded so far. This increase reflects incremental improvements in the quality, quantity, and timeliness of aid data published by the 50 international aid organizations assessed. At the top of the rankings, the African Development Bank (AfDB) (Sovereign) ranked first, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) ranked second, and the highest-ranking bilateral aid agency, the US Millennium Challenge Corporation, came third. Altogether, 12 organizations achieved ‘very good’ scores, the most ever in this category. Access the full report to explore the Index! #humanitarianaid #aidtransparency #IATI https://lnkd.in/djetY8Nh

At present, 224 million school-aged children are affected by crisis and in urgent need of quality education, including 72 million children who are out of school completely. The current analysis elaborated by the Geneva Global Hub for Education in Emergencies (EiE) provides both causes for concern and promising opportunities. As per the former, humanitarian funding for education decreased in 2023, interrupting more than a decade-long trend of yearly increases. The countries where children’s education is at greatest risk are the most underfunded in terms of humanitarian funding. Despite policy commitments, education is not being prioritised in OCHA-managed humanitarian funds. However, the analysis also reveals that global education funds remain a key catalyst for mobilising additional EiE funding. Also, there is still potential for expanding nexus funding approaches for EiE with climate finance investment likely working as a leverage to close the EiE funding gap. #education #EducationinEmergencies #EiE #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/d9qBM2Qi

FCV impacts women, men, girls, and boys differently, deepening gender gaps in education, health, economic participation, and agency. As conflicts rise, more people live in FCV settings, and these countries now rank lowest on gender equality indicators like maternal mortality, school enrollment, and reproductive health care. The World Bank's "A Development Approach to Advancing Gender Engagement and Addressing Gender Inequalities in FCV situations" identifies effective strategies to design, implement, monitor, and measure interventions tailored to distinct needs. This approach paper shares regional experiences, lessons learned, and best practices, along with an action plan to elevate gender issues to a strategic level. #GenderEquality #GBV #humanitarianaid #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dw6Zauuh To deep dive in this topic, don’t miss the Gender Based Violence in Humanitarian Action Advanced Training by Humcap planned in November 2024! https://lnkd.in/dNDDEeK6

According to the latest UNHCR data, 117.3 million people were forcibly displaced at the end of 2023 due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, and public disorder, equating to 1 in 69 people globally. The number of asylum-seekers awaiting decisions rose by 26% to 6.9 million, as new applications exceeded decisions. These figures stem from the failure to maintain peace and security. The frequency, scope, duration, and intensity of conflicts, as measured by conflict-related fatalities, closely correlate with the annual number of people forced to flee both within their own countries and internationally. #displacement #IDP #refugees #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dmTJkCBu

The Project/Programme Planning Guidance Manual recently released by ICRC introduces project/programme planning, describing the different stages of the “project/programme cycle” within the context of ResultsBased Management (RBM). As such, it covers RBM components and their practical application, and briefly summarizes other key cycle phases: assessment, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation, with references to key Federation manuals. Designed primarily for managers in National Societies or the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, it is applicable at any level. It draws on the International Federation's Project Planning Process (2002) and ICRC’s Results-Based Approach (2008), tailored to the organization's needs. #ICRC #projectmanagement #humanitarianaid #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dnaXyrxi
