2023 was the deadliest year for humanitarian workers. 2024 is on track to be even worse. "This World Humanitarian Day, celebrating humanitarian workers is not enough. We need those in power to act now to ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarians." The 2024 efforts for the World Humanitarian Day confront the normalization of attacks on civilians, including humanitarians, and impunity under International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The aim is use public support to pressure world leaders to take action to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarians. By the numbers: 595 humanitarians were victims of attacks in 2023 280 were killed while trying to provide aid to those in crisis 224 were seriously wounded 160 were killed by airstrikes or targeted shelling 93 were killed by state actors, in violation of IHL Targeting humanitarian operators as the means to affect additional suffering on those in crisis is an indirect attack on vulnerable persons, achieved by cutting off access to lifesaving aid. Humanitarian aid workers, as a specific type of noncombatant with specific mandates and protections, engage in crises neutrally, impartially, and humanely. Anything less than an absolute guarantee of their safety and security is reprehensible. #WorldHumanitarianDay #humanitarian #disastermanagement #crisis ACLED (Armed Conflict Location & Event Data) United Nations OCHA

Today on World Humanitarian Day humanitarians are under attack. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarians. 2024 could be even worse. Humanitarians support people in extreme need, often in areas affected by conflicts or disasters, by ensuring that their most basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and protection are met. Attacks harming humanitarians have become common and can be a violation of International Humanitarian Law. We need political will and courage to ensure respect for International Humanitarian Law. The issue isn’t the absence of rules but the failure to uphold them. We need those in power to act now to ensure protection of civilians, including humanitarians, in conflict zones. #ActForHumanity #peace #addyourvoice

Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society executes its humanitarian mandate through the use of seven (7) fundamental principles. Weekly every Wednesday which is themed, "Principle Wednesday", we will unpack each principle and its meaning. So today we start with, Principle 1: HUMANITY The international Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. - Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. - It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples. #fundamentalprinciples #knowredcross #savinglives #humanityprinciple

"To those in power: we look to you to uphold your obligations, you committed to protect civilians in war, to protect the humanitarian workers, to support the lifeline they provide. This is the result of your failure, of your broken promise to humanity. How much more do we need to see before you act?" Attacks on healthcare violate international humanitarian law, depriving individuals of lifesaving services. So far this year, the World Health Organization has verified 720 attacks on healthcare in 13 countries/territories, resulting in 355 deaths and 647 injuries - impacting ambulance drivers, health workers, patients and their families. #actforhumanity #worldhumanitarianday

International Humanitarian Consultant, Executive Leader, Capability Development, Capacity Building, Strategic Engagement, Emergency Management
Each year, #WHD focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. The aim is to build public support to help pressure parties of conflict and world leaders to take action to ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarians, in conflict zones. Despite universally accepted international laws to regulate the conduct of armed conflict and limit its impact, violations of these laws continue unabated, unchallenged and unchecked. And while civilians, including aid workers, pay the ultimate price, the perpetrators continue to evade justice. https://lnkd.in/gstt3iFJ #ActForHumanity #WHD24 #Humanitarians #PleaseActNow
