We meet people where they're at ❤️ That’s why we work to provide basic needs of food, shelter, health, and safety. When individuals are unable to meet their immediate needs, it becomes more difficult to focus on long-term goals such as employment, housing, or education. #basicneeds #community #judgmentfreezone

Just Safety means addressing the needs of a whole person – not just one issue in isolation. Communities have always known how to create safety for themselves – taking a meal to a grieving neighbor, doing yard work for the elderly woman next door, hosting block parties and carne asadas that bring everyone together. But these efforts are completely overlooked (and underfunded) in our current concept of safety. #JustCommunitiesArizona #JustSafety #SafetyNotPunishment

Context Matters: Lack of Self-Control or Pragmatic? The Marshmallow Test is used to determine an individual’s trait of self-control and ability to delay gratification. In this study, the children who ate the marshmallow demonstrated a lack of self-control. The ones who waited to get the second marshmallow demonstrated self-control and had expectations to be more successful in life. What if an individual who ate the marshmallow spent time in a situation where adults never kept promises made to them? What if they have ten siblings and learned that you lose out if you don’t eat your food right away? What if they spent time in a homeless shelter and lost out on meals because they procrastinated? Is labeling them as lacking self-control fair, or is pragmatic more appropriate in those cases?

Bloomberg kindly included some of my thoughts on the SCOTUS decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson this morning. The Court’s decision is a win for public health and public safety on our streets— especially for our most vulnerable neighbors living without shelter. Activists like to simplify this issue to “criminal justice = bad” but the reality is far more complicated. We have seen an unprecedented increase in severe mental illness and substance abuse in the unsheltered homeless population (those who live on the street in tents and sleeping bags) across the country. Leaving unwell people to live on the street is far from compassionate, and I don’t see it as an issue of “freedom.” To make matters worse, studies have found that the mortality rates of homeless individuals on the street are 2.5x that of homeless people in shelters. It is crucial that we get as many people into shelter as possible— whether that’s publicly funded or private and faith-based. Where there is not enough shelter, communities must step up and help find people shelter elsewhere or create designated camping areas with additional services and basic necessities. The lives of people who are least able to help themselves are at stake. We applaud the Court for creating a better pathway forward.

Between 2022 and 2023, federal poverty levels increased 4.1% on average, according to the Health and Human Services Department. This affects many families and individuals in our Colorado communities, especially those relying on public benefits. Why? Because SNAP and WIC don’t cover essential hygiene products. Justice Necessary is teaming up with local Colorado food pantries to ensure everyone has access to personal care items. This initiative aims not only to help people survive, but to thrive. Because a stronger, healthier Colorado benefits all of us. Wondering about ways you can help? -Encourage your local Colorado food pantries to join our Find Your Pantry project: findyourpantry.org/join -Like this post to spread the word -Comment with your thoughts -Share this post to keep the conversation going It’s time to break the silence and ensure everyone has the essentials. #JusticeNecessary #FindYourPantry

In rural communities, compassion knows no bounds. When emergencies strike, it's neighbors who answer the call. 🌾🚒 Whether it's volunteer firefighters, EMTs, or everyday heroes, these acts of service are what keep our communities strong and connected. 💙 Let's honor those who show up not for recognition, but for the love of their community. #FrontlineImpact #VolunteerHeroes #CommunityFirst
