With September well underway, you may be asking yourself where the summer went...it seems to pass so fast! While September days can still feel like summer, the cooler nights can affect garden crops. Cool-season crops may thrive, but growth might slow down quite a bit for heat-loving plants. Starting your garden cleanup slowly and early will leave you with less to do once the frost sets in... Here are a few things you can plan to get done in September: 🌱Start a slow cleanup, removing any bolted plants, dried up leaves, or spent flower heads. This can reduce the cleanup necessary at end of season. 🌱Save whatever seeds you can for next season - some may need to be dried out first. Store in an airtight jar to preserve them. 🌱As the weather cools, tomatoes may remain green from here on out. Remove green tomatoes from the plant and place in a box to ripen. 🌱Finish harvesting herbs and other summer crops nearing the end of their growth. Preserve what you can by drying, freezing or canning. 🌱Collect the leaves that are beginning to fall and add them to your compost bin, along with any other dry plant cuttings from the garden. 🌱Cut back perennial plants and divide if necessary, transplanting to other areas around the garden. 🌱Plant fall blooms like Chrysanthemums and ornamental kale, along with tulip bulbs that will emerge next spring. 🌱If you are looking to add any trees to your landscape, fall is the best time to plant them and you may even get them at a discount!
