Lately the negative media has been loud 📢, and I found myself pondering 🤔 … where are we are headed, as a community, as a Country. Then I found myself channel surfing 📺 last weekend and I saw something brilliant 💡, something I can learn from, let warm my heart 💛, be a part of and something I felt compelled to share. If you haven’t heard the name Shaun Christie-David 🙌 , Columbo Social or Plate it Forward, do yourself a favour and read on. Have you ever eaten a 3-course meal in less than 15 minutes? I failed at it this weekend as I was distracted by the operational scale and efficiency of the temple's kitchen. This weekend I went on a temple run. The scale of operations and the efficiency of some of these temples is simply astounding. Most of the temple administration is either done by governments or by private, not-for-profit organisations called temple development boards. The income for these temples comes mainly through donations done by the people visiting or the ones who believe in the deity. And this income is not taxed by the government. These temples show the true power of word of mouth marketing. The ones that have become famous either have historical significance or some sort of miracle stories attached to them. The demand for the “religious service”, if I can call it that, is always constant. It goes up when the economy does bad. Some of the temples are famous for having devotees wait in queue for hours just to get a glimpse of the deity they revere. And the temples are not obligated to offer a good customer experience. But they do. Most of the temples offer free water and food, with fans and shelter while the devotees wait. This endears the devotees to the temple more and increases their loyalty because the temple has enhanced their customer experience. The temples in my region, irrespective of size, offer free lunch to every person who visits the temple. They ensure that not a single mouth goes unfed and that in itself is a huge operation. The temple I visited yesterday, gets on an average 10,000 people a day. On festivals and special occasions, the number goes upwards of 100,000. A common belief is that a visit to this temple is incomplete without having food. The speed and efficiency with which a 3-course meal is served is astonishing. A person is seated, fed and sent out in under 20 minutes. Over the course of years, the temple has also mastered not just the operations part of it but also the prediction part of it. It has been rated in the top 10 temples in the country that produce the least amount of food waste. This entire experience, in this temple alone, employs over 5,000 people right from farmers for raw materials to cooks to priests and security guards. This is just a snapshot of a big temple that has achieved scale. But the model is pretty much the same across all temples. So, the next time you struggle with customer loyalty, resource optimization, or community engagement, remember the temples. Their timeless wisdom might just hold the answer. ----- PS: This is how many people were being fed at any given point in time.
