If not considered early in the design process, this can create the need for additional changes further down the line which can increase the risk of time delays, and additional expense, as well as retrospective changes which may compromise the original design objectives. Part O aims to reduce the risk of overheating in new build developments and encourage the design and construction of buildings that limit unwanted solar gain during the summer months and provide occupants with adequate means of removing excess heat from indoor environments. We are delighted to see works starting on site at the University of York for their new Interdisciplinary Facility for Indoor Air Quality and Health Research, also referred to as INTERIORS. This innovative project will see the construction of two identical residential properties, one of which will be built to Passivhaus standards and the other to 1990s UK Building Regulations standards. The aim of building these two identical houses, but with differing standards, is to better understand how the airtightness and thermal performance of a building impact the quality of indoor air. As these are typical three-bedroom houses, linked by a central single-storey laboratory facility, scientists will be able to use these buildings to measure how everyday activities affect the quality of air we breathe at home We have been appointed as Lead Consultant, Architect and Principal Designer, alongside Main Contractor Morris & Spottiswood and Structural & M&E Engineers Waterman Group. We are excited to see how this world-leading facility will make an impact, helping us to gain a better understanding of the impact ventilation has on different properties for indoor air quality research and consequently contributing to how homes of the future are built. Skyscraper city: How Sydney’s engineers approach tall building design How strict building regulations impact the construction of Sydney’s skyscrapers, and what the future could hold for tall building design. Key points: Sydney boasts the second largest number of skyscrapers in the country, but engineers face barriers to quickly and cheaply executing new projects. The taller a building, the greater the structural load across aspects such as wind and gravity. Plans for a two km-high skyscraper in Saudi Arabia would tower over all of Sydney’s, and indeed the world’s, structures. Clusters of skyscrapers adorn Sydney’s skyline, from the city’s CBD across the North Shore to Parramatta in the east. But even as these structures act as a reminder of civil engineering prowess, engineers must work within set boundaries that dictate the look and nature of the end product.
