This week, the newly elected members of the European Parliament are meeting for the first Plenary session of the 2024-2029 legislative mandate that sees Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola as candidates for the Commission and Parliament presidencies respectively In this framework and looking at the next five years, #H2Europe had a webinar conversation with a few political leaders from different groups on the priorities for the next mandate concerning #climate ambitions, competitiveness, industrial policy and how hydrogen can connect all of them on the road to the #2030 targets. The #H2Talk “Reaching 2030 – EU mandate to deliver on climate ambition” saw as speakers Vice-President of the EP Jan-Christoph Oetjen, MEP João Albuquerque, MEP Hildegard Bentele, MEP Jens Geier, MEP Radan Kanev and Antonios Nestoras and was moderated by #H2Europe’s CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis. Here are some main takeaways from the conversation: 💧#Hydrogen & #technology Hydrogen is an enabler of industry #decarbonisation and hard-to-abate sectors, as well as a provider of #flexibility for #renewables. Nonetheless, all forces should pitch in: technology neutrality is key when working towards 2030 goals. ⚙ #Industrialpolicy & #competitiveness Debates on climate and industrial policy should converge, moving towards a #greengrowth agenda and an #IndustrialGreenDeal with #sustainability, #competitiveness and #jobs at its heart. Moreover, local content requirements are essential to avoid the deindustrialisation of the continent. 📈 #Finance Financial support should be scaled up for project implementation and for making the #greentransition a #justtranstition. 🍃 #Youth and the future Youth should be reassured on #climate and #environment topics, while being guaranteed a job-secure future. 🌍 #Europe and the world #ETS should become global, providing a level playing field worldwide. Europe has been an example-setter of #carbonneutrality, and a climate envoy would be key in exporting the concept. Building up on these outcomes, and preparing for the #2030 targets, #H2Europe has recently sent a letter to EC President Ursula von der Leyen on how to deliver decarbonisation through competitiveness ✉ https://lnkd.in/egTYXkfd Want to know more? EU Policies for Climate Neutrality in the Decisive Decade 🇪🇺⚠️ As the European Union increases its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, the insights from Agora Energiewende, authored by Andreas Graf and Matthias BUCK et al., offer a comprehensive analysis of Europe's pathway to this target and #NetZero #GHG balance by 2050. Here are the key takeaways from the report: - 🌱 Fostering Public Support: Engaging communities in climate action is crucial for its success. - 🔋 Greening Europe's Industrial Base: Prioritizing cleantech and reducing dependency on fossil fuels is vital. - 🏭 Scaling Clean Power: Accelerating renewable energy and net-zero infrastructure is essential. - 💸 Climate Investments: Ensuring investments are sustainable and equitable across the EU. - 🚀 Policy Innovations: Addressing gaps in current policies to meet future challenges. The transformation required to meet these goals involves significant shifts across all sectors, raising important questions about the practical aspects of the policies needed to meet the 2030 and 2050 targets. In light of that, how can the #EU ensure that its climate policies reduce emissions and become economically feasible to bolster economic competitiveness? #ClimateAction #Sustainability #EUClimatePolicy #CarbonPricing

❗ Today, the European Commission has presented the impact assessment for a 2040 climate target, recommending a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. As the European Alliance to Save Energy (EU-ASE), we welcome the Commission's communication that is aligned with the advice of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change. To achieve these targets, the European Union must champion the Energy Efficiency First principle (#EE1st) in the energy system as well as the industrial ecosystem, which will: 🔵 Accelerate phasing out fossil fuels and increase energy security 🔵 Upgrade a wide range of different sectors, starting with the built environment 🔵 Boost competitiveness by reducing energy costs in industrial processes 🔵 Lower the cost of energy for citizens, thereby supporting a socially fair transition and combating energy poverty Let's commit to these essential steps for a #sustainable #future with the guidance of scientific facts and figures! 🔗 Europe's 2040 climate target and path to climate neutrality by 2050 building a sustainable, just and prosperous society: https://bit.ly/3HQKC4q #energyefficiency #climateaction #climate

As we continue to feel the widespread impacts of climate change, last week's annual G7 summit concluded with little to no progress on climate finance or energy transition topics. Outcomes included: 🔹 No new pledges on climate finance - a significant deliverable of the upcoming COP29 🔹 A new undertaking to end coal power generation from 2030-2035 – steps forward for Japan and Germany 🔹 Reiteration of previous commitments for a net-zero economy by 2050 Considering these limited outcomes and as we look ahead to COP29 Azerbaijan later this year, Osmosis remains steadfast in our philosophy of rewarding action over intent. Political figures must lead the way by fulfilling targets, legislating pledges, and increasing regulation regarding climate finance. #resourceefficiency #climatefinance #climatedata #extremeweather To find out more about our evidence-based research function please visit our website > https://lnkd.in/eEHmtAFj

NEW: our latest report ahead of the G7 Climate, Energy and Environment Ministerial looks at 'what good looks like' for G7 action on climate. We've come up with (a handy) 7 recommendations for G7 economies: 1. The G7’s GHG emissions need to decrease by at least 58% by 2030 compared with 2019 levels, and at least 75% by 2035. 2. Strengthen national 2030 climate targets so that they are aligned with 1.5°C. 3. Strengthen the implementation of policies needed to achieve these targets. 4. Commit to phasing out domestic coal and fossil gas power generation by 2030 and 2035 respectively. 5. End public financing and other support for fossil fuels abroad. 6. Accelerate towards the global goal of tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. 7. Commit new and additional international climate finance in line with their national circumstances, to go well beyond the 100 billion goal, and develop innovative financing instruments to accelerate the provision of accessible finance to vulnerable countries. At the dawn of the new EU policy cycle, where does the EU stand on its journey to become climate neutral? The newly launched second annual progress report of the @European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) shows positive movement in most sectors and cross-cutting areas, but the pace is still too slow to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. While all building blocks of a climate neutral society stayed within the same progress category compared to ECNO’s 2023 assessment, there are promising changes bubbling under the surface! In six of the assessed building blocks – especially #electricity, #industry, #cleantech,#JustTransition – ECNO has unveiled significant improvements in enabling conditions for the transition, for example: The share of variable renewable electricity generation increased by 2.2%-points per year – a notable improvement to last year’s assessment. Likewise, employment in the renewable energy sector grew significantly, now totalling almost 1.7 million full time equivalents. Read more and download the report and summary for policy-makers https://lnkd.in/ek_XuhCd ECNO, launched in 2023, aims to help the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050 by providing scientifically rigorous annual checks of real-life progress across 13 economic sectors and cross-cutting areas. This year’s report looks at changes across a comprehensive set of 124 indicators and analyses policy contexts. EUpolicy #climateneutrality #progressreport #ECNOlaunch
