The first day of the Connecting Green Hydrogen Europe 2024 event in Madrid covered several key topics that are central to the advancement of the green hydrogen industry. • European Hydrogen Strategies: The opening keynote addresses focused on the overarching strategies of the European Union to integrate hydrogen into the energy mix and the role it will play in achieving climate goals • Infrastructure Development: Discussions centered on building the necessary infrastructure to support the hydrogen value chain across Europe, ensuring that production, storage, and distribution networks are in place • European Hydrogen Network: A significant topic was the creation of a network to connect supply and demand centers for hydrogen across different regions, facilitating a seamless hydrogen economy • Hydrogen Safety and Regulations: Ensuring a secure and responsible hydrogen economy within the EU was another critical subject, with emphasis on safety standards and regulatory frameworks

💥 European Court of Auditors warns that EU hydrogen targets are unrealistic and need a reality check! 👋 We've been saying this for years! 📈 The EU's oversized hydrogen plans seriously threaten the bloc's public finances and decarbonisation efforts. 🚀 Why? No other technology has experienced such rapid growth as planned by the EU for hydrogen production. All this despite concerns about its environmental impact, cost, and readiness. 🤔 Why gamble Europe's decarbonisation on unproven and expensive pathways when viable alternatives are ready? Direct electrification and renewable energy, combined with enhanced energy efficiency in buildings, industry, and transport, can decarbonise our energy systems faster and cheaper. ⚠️ The European Commission should reconsider its hydrogen production scale for 2030 and learn the lesson to face the hype around Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and Small Modular Reactors (SMR). 👉 Read our OpEd: https://lnkd.in/daYkqKBi 👉 Check out our policy briefing: https://lnkd.in/eA-uPzYh

The European Commission seems to be waking up, by fits and starts, from its hydrogen daydreams. Will they learn the lesson? A financial watchdog's statement that the EU's hydrogen-based decarbonisation plans are unrealistic and prohibitively expensive is significant. Time and money are scarce resources in the fight against climate change. The European Court of Auditors' report strikes at the core of the "technology-neutral" approach to climate policy, echoed by Von der Leyen in her speech to the European Parliament today. Not all options are valid for decarbonising Europe. Investing massive public funds in unproven and costly solutions, when viable alternatives exist, is simply shooting ourselves in the foot. We need renewable hydrogen, but not to the extent that it distracts us from proven methods to reduce emissions: energy savings, renewables, and electrification of industry, transport, and heating. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCkMgQMA
