2 No exits in 10 years.  An insight into AgFunder Global AgriFoodTech Investment Report 2024. Agrifood tech startups raised $15.6 billion globally in 2023, down 49.2%  from $30.5 billion in 2022. Funding to all categories declined except - Bioenergy & Biomaterials  Farm Robotics, Mechanization & Equipment. 2023 highlights- REFER PIC $15.6B raised globally  $830M - biggest deal Bioenergy & Biomate $3B funding Bioenergy & Biomate $1B biggest downstream category $545B biggest debt deal Europe highlights: Europe’s farm tech comparatively did well than other regions, declining just 16% YOY compared to the Americas, which dropped 68%, Europe sped ahead in 2023, with startups raising $240 million over 73 deals on the continent. $204.7 billion raised globally since 2014 The overall industry hasn’t had even one exit, and this is solely because the industry is still a new sector. 2024 funding predictions: Alternative protein especially cultivated meat and precision fermentation. Food delivery with AI enhances these services.  Biotech and health/nutrition startups  climate and AI VCs point of views- The food industry needs a transition, not disruption. Companies can't keep losing money and must set realistic expectations Focus on fundamentals Progressive innovations rather than dramatic changes. The Latest Startup Funding Buzz 1.    Skyflow a data privacy and AI privacy company built to radically simplify how companies isolate, protect, and govern their customers' most sensitive data raised $30 million to extend its Series B funding. 2.    Pelago, a leading digital clinic partner to U.S. businesses and health plans for substance use management, raised $58 million bringing the total funding to $151 million. 3.    Blueground, the largest global operator of furnished, flexible rentals for 30+ day stays, secured $45 million in Series D funding. 4.    Terragia Biofuel, a technology startup aiming to drive the next generation of biofuels, raised a $6 million seed round to develop and deploy technology to produce sustainable liquid fuels from cellulosic biomass. 5.    Vizcom, a company deploying AI to transform the future of industrial design, raised $20 million in Series A funding. Vizcom is deploying AI to transform the future of industrial product visualisation and design. 6.    Kidsy Inc, a disruptor in online retail, has raised over $1 million to provide consumers greater access to discounted baby and kids products. 7. Manifest Technologies, developer of an AI-powered computational neuro-imaging platform for CNS disease, unveiled itself with an initial funding and partnership with a bigtime global pharmaceutical company. The unique nuances as well as macroeconomic climate made the funding journey for #AgTech startups rather bumpy, reflecting in slow adoption and very few exits relative to other sectors. However, in a recent interview, FMC Ventures’ Managing Director @Mark Brooks stated that AgTech is still venturable. 💸 Here are the fields he’s most excited about: 🔸 #Agrifintech, which is instrumental in helping farmers get access to credit lending and enables better access to more sustainable inputs 🔸 Genetic editing: In crop protection, for instance, gene editing may stand out as a complement to biologicals. 🔸 Anything around #genAI and #ML: For example, in biologicals, generative AI could help with understanding what genes to target and how to target them. Generative AI is a way to accelerate or shrink the R&D process and stay ahead of or at least catch up to the impact that climate change is having on pest pressures or disease resistance. One more thing for agtech startups to watch is probably they gonna see fewer ag-specific funds. There’ll be more impact funds, more sustainability-focused funds, and ESG funds, Mark says.
