Infrastructure | The European Rail Sector stakeholders welcome the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the use of railway infrastructure capacity in the single European railway area. ✅ Rail is the most sustainable option for freight and passenger transport with one train emitting nine times less CO₂ emissions and using six times less energy compared to road traffic. 🚉 The status quo is not an option: rail modal shift has to increase and the international rail system in Europe needs to be adapted to face the challenges of the climate and energy crisis. 💡 CER and the association of European Rail Infrastructure Managers have published a joint vision addressed to co-legislators. The vision highlights the work accomplished and underlines improvements to increase capacity. 📢 An important event has been organised by CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) in the European Parliament today lining up the rapporteur of the #RailwayInfrastructureCapacityManagement Regulation, Tilly Metz (European Greens), as well as her shadows: Marian-Jean Marinescu (European People's Party), Dominique Riquet (Renew Europe) and Bogusław Liberadzki (Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament). The Department of Transport in Ireland and the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) in Northern Ireland have just published the Final Report of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, developed in the context of the “New Decade, New Approach” agreement. The Report, has been approved for publication by the Irish Government and DfI Minister, sets out a strategic vision for the development of the rail system across the island of Ireland over the coming decades. The Report sets out 32 strategic recommendations to enhance and expand the rail system in Ireland and Northern Ireland up to 2050, aligning with net carbon zero commitments in both jurisdictions. The Report estimates that the capital cost of implementing all of the recommendations by 2050 is about €35bn-€37 billion/£29-£31 billion in 2023 prices, and that the monetised benefits to society from such investment would cover the costs, meeting the goal of economic feasibility. The Round-the-Island High-speed rail network proposed bill where the co-sponsors are the Legislative speaker and the Deputy Legislative speaker was referred to the Economic and Transport Committee. The National Developement Council (NDC ) expressed concern about the possibility of having administrative chaos and potential confusion that could affect the lives of everyday people who use rely on efficient transportation systems if the bill is enacted without careful consideration. Bring human touch to bureaucratic systems, the NDC puts and emphasis on the importance of collaboration and clear communication towards a common goal. The significance of reliable and efficient transportation in people's lives ensuring accessibility and dependable infrastructure is being recognized by the NDC. Its plea is to have a balanced approach, consideration of the well-being of the citizens and respect for established frameworks.
