Mentoring is a way to positively impact others while also gaining personal fulfillment and growth. We are honored to work with an amazing community of mentors as we create an appellate field that reflects all of us. Our organization relies on attorneys, judges, clerks, and professors donating their time to build relationships with students. Today, Purti Pareek, appellate/SCOTUS litigation associate at Mayer Brown shares why she serves as a mentor to the next generation of lawyers: "When I was in law school, there were no other people of color/first-generation who would publicly voice that they were thinking about clerking. I did not know anyone who wanted to pursue appellate work. I felt sheepish the first time I told someone I was interested in pursuing appellate work but had no idea what it looked like. I mentor with TAP, and other organizations, because I want all students to have access to information that can help them make the best decisions possible. My mentees teach me more than I can teach them -- they keep me current on new legal roles and legal organizations. Edwards and Moniel Sanders were named First Runner Ups at the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition as part of the Midwest Black Law Students Asssociation (MWBLSA) Regional Convention in Detroit, Michigan. Both students have advanced to the national competition in Houston, Texas next month! This encounter sparked her decision to apply to Teach for America and law school, driven by a desire to develop strong writing and advocacy skills. 📚 Before joining Winston & Strawn, Brandi served as a middle school English teacher and Scholar Bowl Coach in Jacksonville, Florida. During law school at Washington University, she organized a pipeline to law mentoring program for elementary students, demonstrating her commitment to community impact. 🗣️ Brandi's three guiding principles: 1. Passionate Involvement: "Find an issue, practice area, or cause you are passionate about and get involved in the Bar. Consistency in 1-2 areas allows you to build a brand for yourself over time." 2. Mentorship Matters: "Be intentional about maintaining mentoring relationships and recognize when a mentoring relationship has come to an end. Be the mentor that you desire." 3. Self-Grace: "Show yourself grace. Being an attorney can be challenging, and you have to be the first person to show yourself grace. Learn from every mistake, but keep moving forward."
